Early life and background

Punit J. Pathak was born on 1 November 1987 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a middle-class family with roots in Kutch, Gujarat, he grew up in the city where he also completed his schooling at Bombay Cambridge School and later graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. From an early age he enjoyed cricket and played for his school team, though his interest in dance developed later during his college years.

When he was 17, Punit earned a scholarship to train at Terence Lewis’ dance academy. He studied several dance styles there and went on to work at the academy as a trainer before moving on to assist in other projects. His family supported him unevenly: his mother was encouraging of his dance ambitions while his father preferred that he join the family business.

Career

Punit’s public career began when he auditioned for Dance India Dance Season 2. He advanced through the competition and finished as the second runner-up, which opened doors for work in choreography and television. He served as a choreographer on shows such as Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 and was later credited as an assistant choreographer on the 2011 film F.A.L.T.U, working with Remo D’Souza.
