Early life and backgroundPunit Tiwari was born on 6 February 1991 in Chittaranjan, West Bengal. He spent his childhood in Chittaranjan and later made Mumbai his hometown. Educated at Deshbandhu Vidyalaya Boys in Chittaranjan, Tiwari pursued higher studies across multiple institutions: he completed a BSc in IT at Kuvempu University in Shimoga, undertook a postgraduate diploma in TV Journalism at Jamia Millia Islamia, and earned a master’s degree in Mass Communication from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology. He also trained in acting at the Madhya Pradesh School of Drama in Bhopal.
Career
Tiwari’s early professional life blended writing and theatre. He began freelance writing in 2011 and produced content for the non-profit Room to Read in New Delhi. That same year he became involved with the Bahroop Arts Group, an amateur theatre collective connected to Jawaharlal Nehru University students, marking the start of his journey as a theatre artist.
Over the next several years he worked with an array of theatre directors and groups, including Kala Mandali and the Madhya Pradesh School of Drama. He performed in productions such as Neelkanth Nirala and toured with the ensemble for Aranya Gatha. Between 2016 and 2020 he was part of the Kahani Depot Group, taking part in storytelling events such as the Udaipur Tales International Storytelling Festival. In 2019 he moved into directing, designing and directing the play In Dino Har Roz.
Tiwari also translated his stage experience to screen roles. His film debut came with Panchlait, in which he played Nand Ji. He appeared on television and digital platforms in a variety of supporting roles: a Second Navy Officer in the Netflix film Soni, a junior ophthalmologist in the Prime Video series Laakhon Mein Ek, and small-screen appearances including the political satire Chatkara News on Anjan TV.
His screen work continued through the late 2010s and into the 2020s with parts in short films such as Comedian (2019) and White Shadows (2020), and feature roles in Jamun, 200: Halla Ho and I Am Draupadi in 2021. In 2023 he appeared as Veer Singh’s son-in-law in the Netflix series Trial by Fire and played Monu, a CanDo employee, in the film Chhatriwali. The same year he drew wider attention for his portrayal of Prince Mishra in TVF’s web series Sandeep Bhaiya.
