Purnota Dutta Bahl was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, in 1980. Raised in a family with connections to public service and banking, she completed a Bachelor of Commerce followed by an MBA and later attended institutions including Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai and the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad.

Purnota began her professional life in marketing and brand roles. After finishing her post-graduate studies she worked as a brand manager at a national newspaper from 2006 to 2008 and then moved to head the marketing team at Shaadi.com (People Interactive) in Mumbai.
