Early life and background

Pushpendra Singh was born in 1978 in Saiyan village near Agra in Uttar Pradesh. He completed his school education at Birla High School, Pilani, finishing in 1996. Following school he pursued higher studies at Jiwaji University in Gwalior where he completed a BBA and later earned a Master of Tourism Management from the University of Lucknow in 2001.

Singh cultivated an early interest in cinema while at school and later developed his craft through formal training. He attended the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune for an acting course between 2006 and 2008 and also took part in filmmaking training at Berlinale Talents. For a period he returned to FTII as a faculty member, working as a professor before concentrating full time on filmmaking and acting.

Career

Pushpendra Singh’s screen work spans acting, writing, producing and directing. His first credited directorial feature is Lajwanti (2014), a film he also produced, acted in and wrote. Those films earned international recognition: Maru Ro Moti received the Golden Heynal Award for Best Music Documentary at Krakow Film Festival, while Laila Aur Satt Geet won multiple honors including a Netpac Award at Jeonju and a Best Director prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

In 2023 Singh wrote and directed Ajmer 92, a film based on a widely reported criminal case. The film’s release and screening generated public responses and an appeal from a national organization expressing concern about its social impact. Singh defended the film’s presentation as a factual representation of the events it portrays.
