R. B. Sreekumar Biography

R. B. Sreekumar is a retired 1971-batch Indian Police Service officer from the Gujarat cadre who later entered politics with the Aam Aadmi Party. He roseto

Early life and background

R. B. Sreekumar was born on 12 February 1947 in Ooruttambalam, in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. He completed multiple postgraduate degrees, including an MA in History, an MA in Gandhian Philosophy, an MA in Literature and an LLM in Criminology, after studying at Kerala University. Before joining the civil services he briefly worked as a lecturer at Kerala University.

Career

Sreekumar cleared the UPSC examination in 1971 and trained at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy. He was commissioned into the Indian Police Service in 1972 and assigned to the Gujarat cadre.

In the early phase of his career he served as Superintendent of Police across several Gujarat districts. In 1979 he moved on deputation to the Central Industrial Security Force and served there as a Commandant until 1984. He was promoted to Deputy Inspector General level in 1986 and served as Director of Security for the Gujarat Electricity Board. The following year he was posted to the Intelligence Bureau as a Deputy Director, after involvement in counter-espionage operations in Gujarat’s Kutch region that drew appreciation from senior IB leadership.

Sreekumar’s later career returned him to Gujarat. By 2000 he held the rank of Additional Director General of Police and led the armed unit of the Gujarat police. In 2002 he was made head of the state police intelligence department. That year he submitted a detailed report to the Chief Election Commissioner outlining the extensive impact of the Gujarat communal unrest across the state’s constituencies and police districts, and he advised postponement of elections in that environment.

Public profile

Sreekumar came to wider public attention for two major reasons. He filed multiple affidavits and gave testimony to the Nanavati-Mehta Commission after the 2002 Gujarat riots, and he submitted the assessment to the Election Commission that highlighted the scale of areas affected by the disturbances.

He has also been a central figure in allegations relating to an espionage case from the mid-1990s involving a former ISRO scientist. The matter attracted national investigation and subsequent judicial findings; the CBI reported issues with the initial case, and the Supreme Court later issued directions and compensation related to that episode. Sreekumar, who was serving with the Intelligence Bureau at the relevant time, has been identified in public accounts and statements about the case, and he has denied direct involvement in certain interrogation activities while acknowledging limited questioning of other suspects.

During his service Sreekumar received government medals recognizing meritorious and distinguished service in 1990 and 1998.

Controversies and legal matters

Sreekumar’s career has involved several contested episodes. An FIR was filed in 1986 alleging that an accused in custody had suffered serious injuries; that matter was closed the same year for lack of evidence. The 1994–1997 espionage investigation and its aftermath damaged his standing in some quarters and featured in later public exchanges.

More recently, in 2022 he was among those whose joint plea was rejected by the Supreme Court in a matter connected to evidence presented in relation to the 2002 riots; the court’s judgment criticized coordinated efforts to advance allegations it found to be false. Proceedings in connection with that judgment led to FIRs and subsequent action by law enforcement.

Politics

After retiring from the police, Sreekumar joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2014 and has been associated with it since. His move into politics followed a long public record of filing reports and affidavits and giving testimony on matters of public interest in Gujarat.

Public profile

Sreekumar has been described as an Ambedkarite and also as a student of Hindu scriptures; public statements and profiles reference his religious and philosophical interests alongside his administrative career. Physically he is described with a height around 170 cm and dark brown eyes, and public information lists his long-term residence in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Personal life

Sreekumar is married to Rajalakshmi. The couple have a daughter, Deepa, who is a lawyer. His hometown is listed as Ooruttambalam in Kerala, and he holds Indian nationality.

Latest updates

After the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that examined the conduct of a group of individuals who had advanced allegations about the 2002 riots, Sreekumar faced legal action connected to the court’s observations about fabricated evidence. References to those proceedings and public reactions continued to feature in media accounts. No further career appointments are recorded following the end of his police service.
