Early life and background

Madhavan Balaji Ranganathan was born on 1 June 1970 in Jamshedpur (then in Bihar, now in Jharkhand). He comes from a Tamil family and spent his childhood in Bihar, where his father worked as a management executive at Tata Steel and his mother held a managerial role at the Bank of India. Educated at D.B.M.S. English School in Jamshedpur, he went on to study at Rajaram College, Kolhapur and Kishinchand Chellaram College, Mumbai, earning a B.Sc. in Electronics and completing post-graduate work in public speaking.

As a young man Madhavan took part in NCC activities and extra-curricular military training. During college he represented India abroad as a cultural ambassador and later travelled for further training with British defence institutions. His early ambitions included a desire to join the defence services, and he remained active in public speaking and communication—skills he later taught in Mumbai workshops.

Career

Madhavan began his screen journey with small roles and modelling assignments in the 1990s. His earliest on-screen work included a minor part in the 1996 film Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin and a Kannada film debut in Shanti Shanti Shanti (1998). He went on to break through in Tamil cinema with Alaipayuthey (2000) and became a familiar face in popular Tamil films such as Minnale, Dumm Dumm Dumm, Run and Aayutha Ezhuthu.

He also established a successful presence in Hindi cinema, appearing in films including Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Rang De Basanti, Guru and 3 Idiots. In 2011 he played the lead in the romantic comedy Tanu Weds Manu opposite Kangana Ranaut. His screen work spans seven different languages and includes roles in both mainstream and critically acclaimed projects.

In addition to acting, Madhavan has worked as a television host and has credits as a writer and producer. He has anchored shows such as Tol Mol Ke Bol and been involved in other creative aspects of filmmaking. Over his career he has been recognised with several honours including multiple Filmfare Awards in South categories for acting and a SIIMA Critics Award for his performance in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.

Public profile

Madhavan married Sarita Birje, whom he met during a communication workshop in Maharashtra, and the couple married in 1999. They have a son, Vedaant, who is a competitive swimmer and has represented India at international events, winning medals at junior and senior levels and setting a national junior record in the 1500m freestyle in 2022.

Madhavan is a vegetarian and has been associated with PETA. He enjoys outdoor pursuits such as biking, trekking and golf; he has climbed Mount Cook in New Zealand. His wife has also contributed professionally by working as a dress designer on several of his films.

Philanthropy and public service

Beyond his film work, Madhavan has supported charitable causes and organisations, including The Banyan, and has participated in fund-raising events and charity performances. In 2016 he was appointed a goodwill ambassador for Lepra India to promote action against leprosy. He has also taken part in celebrity charity golf events.

In September 2023 Madhavan was appointed President of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, and became chairman of its governing council, a role that places him at the centre of one of India’s leading film education institutions.

During the Covid-19 pandemic Madhavan obtained a captain’s license and purchased a yacht, which he keeps in Dubai. He has spoken about solitude and creativity on board, using time at sea to write. He also owns a notable collection of motorcycles and has shown an interest in boating as a private pursuit.
