Early life and background

Rachin Ravindra was born on 18 November 1999 in Wellington, New Zealand. He grew up in a family with roots in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and spent his formative years in Wellington where he attended Hutt International Boys’ School. His parents moved from India to Wellington in the early 1990s. As a child he practised cricket in the backyard with his father and represented his school in age-group competitions, developing into a high-performing junior player.

Career

Ravindra progressed through New Zealand’s age-group system, appearing for Wellington Under-17 and Under-19 sides before earning selection for national under-19 squads. He was named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2016 and 2018 Under-19 World Cups and was recognised by the ICC as a rising star of the 2018 tournament for his performances.

At domestic level he represents Wellington and the Wellington Firebirds. He made his first-class debut for New Zealand A against Pakistan A in October 2018 and his List A debut for New Zealand A later that month. During the 2018–19 season he earned a domestic contract with Wellington and made his T20 debut for the province in January 2019.

Ravindra recorded his maiden List A century for Wellington in November 2019 and followed that with his first first-class century in March 2020 in the Plunket Shield. Wellington retained him with a domestic contract for the 2020–21 season, and he continued to feature for New Zealand A, including a tour against the West Indies in India in November 2020 where he scored 112 in a practice fixture.

Internationally, Ravindra made his T20 debut for New Zealand on 1 September 2021 against Bangladesh at Mirpur. He made his Test debut on 25 November 2021 against India at Kanpur and his ODI debut on 25 March 2023 versus Sri Lanka in Auckland. He was named in New Zealand’s squads for several major assignments, including the final of the 2019–21 ICC World Test Championship and the Test series in India in 2022.

In county cricket he joined Durham for the 2022 County Championship season and marked his debut for the club with a double century, scoring 217 against Worcestershire.

Ravindra was selected in New Zealand’s squad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup. In the opening match of that tournament he scored an unbeaten 123 off 96 balls against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. His innings included five sixes and eleven fours and formed part of a 273-run partnership with Devon Conway. During the 2023 World Cup he also scored 116 off 89 balls in a match against Australia, becoming one of the youngest batters to record two World Cup centuries before turning 26. He wears jersey number 8 for New Zealand and has sometimes worn number 10.

In the Indian Premier League auction held in December 2023, Ravindra was bought by Chennai Super Kings for INR 1.8 crore.
