Radha Mangeshkar was born on 29 July 1981 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into the prominent Mangeshkar musical family. Her father is music director Hridaynath Mangeshkar and her mother is Bharati Malvankar Mangeshkar. She grew up surrounded by music: her grandfather Deenanath Mangeshkar was an actor and classical vocalist, and several of her aunts, including Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, are among India’s best-known singers. Radha belongs to a Marathi family of Goan origin and spent her childhood and formative years in Mumbai.

From an early age she trained under her father. She underwent the traditional initiation ceremony from him as her guru and began singing publicly as a child.
