Early life and background

Ragala Venkat Rahul was born on 16 March 1997 in Stuartpuram, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in a sporting family: his father, Ragala Madhu, was a kabaddi player who pushed Rahul and his brother into formal sports training at an early age. The family later moved to Hyderabad, where Rahul continued his schooling and athletic development.

Rahul trained at the Telangana State Sports School and attended AP Sports School before pursuing higher education at Acharya Nagarjuna University. From childhood he competed in weightlifting events and developed into a national and international contender in the mid-weight categories.

Career

Rahul’s international breakthrough began in youth competition. In 2012 he won a gold medal at the Youth Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Samoa. The following years brought further success in youth and junior events: he took gold at the Asian Youth Games in 2013 and won at the Asian Youth (YOG Qualification) and Junior Championships in 2014, the same year he earned a silver medal at the Summer Youth Olympics.

Transitioning to senior competition, Rahul continued to collect medals at major regional meets. He won silver at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2015, reached the top of the podium at the same championships in 2017, and earned another silver in 2019. His most prominent achievement came at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, where he won the gold medal in the 85 kg category by lifting a 338 kg total (151 kg snatch and 187 kg clean and jerk).

Rahul has competed in multiple weight categories over his career, including the 77 kg class early on and later moving into 85 kg and 89 kg divisions. At the 2019 Commonwealth Senior Championships he lifted a 325 kg total in the 89 kg class (145 kg snatch and 180 kg clean and jerk) to win silver.

Injuries and recovery have been part of his journey. After the 2018 Commonwealth Games he sustained a minor knee injury that required a roughly seven-month break from competition and a reported expenditure on treatment. Following rehabilitation he returned to competition and won a medal at the Inter-Railway Championship.

Rahul is the son of Ragala Madhu and the late Neelima. He has a younger brother, Kunal Varun, who is also a weightlifter, and a sister, Madhupriya, who has played kabaddi. Rahul remains unmarried.

Off the platform, he has worked in the Indian Railways; in 2015 he was employed as a ticket collector at Secunderabad Railway Station. He follows a non-vegetarian diet and has a tattoo on his chest bearing his parents’ images, a personal tribute completed after his mother’s passing.
