Raghavendra Rathore Biography
Raghavendra Rathore is an Indian lifestyle designer from the erstwhile royal family of Jodhpur, known for modernising traditional menswear such as the Band
Early life and backgroundRaghavendra Singh Rathore was born on 7 October 1967 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, into the former royal family of Jodhpur. He grew up with strong family ties to the region’s royal heritage: his great-grandfather was Maharaja Sardar Singh and his grandfather was Major General Maharaj Dhiraj Sir Ajit Singh. That lineage influenced his aesthetic and interest in traditional Indian dress.
Rathore attended Mayo College, a boarding school in Ajmer, and later pursued higher education in the United States. His studies included time at Hampshire College and Marlboro College, and he completed a B.F.A. in Design at Parsons School of Design in New York. Early jobs in the U.S. included practical manual work and restoration projects to support his education.
Career
After graduating from Parsons, Rathore gained industry experience in New York. He interned with Donna Karan at DKNY and later worked as a senior assistant to Oscar de la Renta. He also spent time designing for the house of Pierre Balmain before returning to India in the mid-1990s.
In 1994, aged 27, Rathore launched his own bespoke label Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur (internationally known as Inde Pret), initially concentrating on men’s wear. He opened a small store in New Delhi and gradually broadened his creative practice to include women’s wear, childrenswear, jewellery, interiors and product design. Over time his retail presence expanded to more than 30 stores across India and abroad.
Rathore became closely associated with two traditional garments: the Bandhgala jacket and Jodhpuri trousers. He and his label worked to contemporise the Bandhgala’s construction and silhouette, and his company secured exclusive patent rights on Jodhpurs and Bandhgala jackets, positioning the brand as a leading name in modern Indian menswear.
His work has crossed into film and hospitality design; he has designed costumes for movies and has undertaken interior projects such as the reception area of the luxury Suryagarh hotel in Jaisalmer. In 2005 he diversified into a chocolate brand, Les Chocolates de Jodhpur, and in 2011 launched a womenswear line called Blue Mantra.
Rathore’s labels continued to evolve: in 2015 he introduced a ready-to-wear menswear label, Imperial India Company (IIC), framed as a humanitarian initiative that supports rural handicrafts and uses handloom fabrics in collaboration with weavers and NGOs. In 2018 he co-founded The Gurukul School of Design in Jaipur, a design institute offering a four-year bachelor’s degree in design.
In the same year Rathore’s parent company, Future 101 Design, welcomed strategic partners when the Italian house Ermenegildo Zegna and Reliance Industries each acquired a stake in the business. That partnership was described as helping the brand expand into international markets.
Public profile
Rathore is often described by the nicknames Prince Raghu and Raghu, and has been called the King of Bandhgala in coverage of his work. His clients have included royals, international figures and Bollywood personalities. He has received several honours: the Rajasthan Chief Minister’s award in 2011 for promoting Rajasthani heritage, Designer of the Year at the 2014 GQ Men of the Year awards, and the Exquisite Art and Fashion Award at the 21st Century UK’s Icon Awards in 2020.
Rathore runs the Raghavendra Rathore Foundation, an NGO that aims to help underprivileged communities become self-reliant through local arts, crafts and resources. He has spoken about drawing early inspiration from family members and from designers such as Oscar de la Renta.
Personal life
Rathore is married to Kavita Rathore (née Kavita Singh), daughter of Thakur Uday Bahn Singh of Nana. The couple have two children, a son named Amar and a daughter named Devyani. His father, the late Maharaja Swaroop Singh, served as an MLA; his brother Suryaveer Singh is known as a collector and hotelier.
