Early life and background

Raghuraj Singh Shakya was born on 1 July 1968 in Dhaulpur Khera, Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh. He earned a Master of Commerce degree from Agra University after studying at Adarsh Krishna College in Shikohabad. His family background includes his father Paatiram Shakya, who worked as a wrestler, and his mother Ramvati Shakya. He is married to Seema Singh Shakya; the couple married on 9 May 1998 and have two sons, Piyush Raj Shakya and Ayush Raj Shakya.

Career

Shakya began his public life as a student leader and held leadership roles in youth organizations during his college years. He entered national politics as a Samajwadi Party candidate and won the Etawah Sadar Lok Sabha seat in 1999, returning to Parliament for a second consecutive term in 2004.

During his parliamentary tenure he served on a number of committees, including panels on Home Affairs, Private Members' Bills and Resolutions, Energy, Public Accounts, Defence, Water Resources, Coal and Steel, and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Rural Development. He was appointed to the Estimates Committee in May 2008.

At the state level he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Etawah Sadar seat in 2012. He contested the 2009 Lok Sabha election from Fatehpur Sikri on a Samajwadi Party ticket but finished fourth.

Party affiliations and recent political moves

Shakya spent many years with the Samajwadi Party and has described the party's founder Mulayam Singh Yadav as a political mentor. He left the Samajwadi Party on 27 January 2017 amid factional disputes and joined Shivpal Singh Yadav’s Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia), later serving as that party's state president for five years.

On 7 February 2022 he resigned from the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP nominated him to contest the Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll in November 2022 against the Samajwadi Party candidate Dimple Yadav. He filed his nomination on 16 November 2022 and campaigned for the seat, which had become vacant after the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. In the bypoll held on 8 December 2022, he was defeated by Dimple Yadav.
