Rahi Sarnobat Biography

Indian pistol shooter Rahi Jeevan Sarnobat rose from Kolhapur to become one of India’s leading women in 25m pistol, winning multiple Commonwealth and Asian

Early life and background

Rahi Jeevan Sarnobat was born on 30 October 1990 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Raised in Kolhapur, she attended Usharaje High School and later studied at Vivekanand College in Kolhapur. Her training and development as a shooter progressed through facilities including the Shiva Chattrapati Sports Complex and the Balewadi Shooting Range in Pune.

Rahi grew up in a family headed by her parents, Jeevan and Prabha Sarnobat. She has described interests outside sport that include reading, yoga and travel. Her preferred foods include regional snacks such as vada pav and chakkli, and she has cited fellow Maharashtrian shooter Tejaswini Sawant as an inspiration.

Career

Rahi chose shooting as a career in 2007 and began collecting medals at major multi-sport events within a year. Her first noted international success came with gold at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune. She followed that with two gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Progressing on the senior international circuit, Rahi earned a bronze at the 2011 ISSF World Cup, which helped secure her place at the 2012 London Olympics. In 2013 she made history for India in the pistol discipline by winning the 25m pistol gold at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon, the first Indian pistol shooter to claim a world cup gold in that event.

Her run of strong performances continued at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she won gold in the women’s 25m pistol. Later that year at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon she won a team bronze in the 25m pistol alongside teammates Heena Sidhu and Anisa Sayyed.

Rahi’s career faced a major setback at the end of 2015 when she suffered a significant elbow injury. Despite attempting to compete in qualifiers for the 2016 Rio Olympics, the injury worsened and forced her to take nearly a year away from competition. To support her comeback she worked with coach Munkhbayar Dorjsuren and has also been coached by Anatolii Piddubnyi.

Her rehabilitation culminated in a landmark achievement at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, where on 22 August 2018 she became the first Indian woman to win gold in the women’s 25m pistol event at those Games, setting a Games record in the process. The state government of Maharashtra rewarded her success with a financial grant, and later that year the Government of India honoured her with the Arjuna Award on 25 September 2018.

Public profile

Rahi is known in Indian sport as a specialist in the 25m pistol and has been nicknamed “Golden Girl” in recognition of her multiple gold-medal performances at Commonwealth and Asian levels. She has represented India at the Olympic Games, ISSF World Cups and continental multisport events. Her public image highlights resilience, particularly for returning to top-level competition after a serious injury.

Latest updates

After her recovery period following the 2015 elbow injury, Rahi returned to international competition and achieved the pinnacle of her Asian Games career in 2018. That same year she received both state recognition and the national Arjuna Award for her performances.

Rahi remains unmarried and continues to be based in Maharashtra. Her listed physical characteristics include a height of approximately 157 cm and black hair and eyes. She competes for India and practices a regimen that has included coaching from international and national specialists to refine her pistol shooting technique.
