Rahul Bhatia Biography
Rahul Bhatia is an Indian businessman best known as the co-founder of IndiGo Airlines and Group Managing Director of InterGlobe Enterprises. Born in Nainit
Early life and backgroundRahul Bhatia was born on 18 December 1960 in Nainital, Uttarakhand, and grew up in Delhi. He attended Modern School on Barakhamba Road in New Delhi before moving to Canada to study engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and achieved placement on the Dean’s Honour List. During his student years he worked with IBM on an automated screen manufacturing plant project and spent time in the Information Technology department of United Airlines.
Career
After returning to India in 1984, Bhatia explored opportunities in telecommunications and briefly considered further academic study, but soon became involved with his father’s air-travel business. His father, Kapil Bhatia, had begun Delhi Express in 1964 and later sold his share to form InterGlobe Enterprises with Rahul on 6 October 1989. Under Rahul Bhatia’s leadership the group diversified into multiple travel-related businesses including civil aviation, hospitality, airline management, travel commerce, pilot training, aircraft maintenance engineering and logistics.
In the 1990s InterGlobe obtained an all-India franchise to provide back-office services, a venture that evolved into a presence in airline reservation systems. Rahul maintained professional ties from his time at United Airlines, and after years of persuasion he joined with Rakesh Gangwal to found IndiGo. The airline obtained a licence in 2004, and in June 2005 placed a major order for Airbus A320-200 aircraft. IndiGo received its first Airbus in July 2006 and began operations in August 2006 with service from New Delhi.
Under Bhatia’s stewardship IndiGo grew rapidly, adding fleet and destinations and becoming a leading low-cost carrier. By 2010 the company reported significant sales that reflected its rapid growth. Rahul has held senior roles across the InterGlobe group, and on 26 April 2018 he became interim chief executive officer of InterGlobe Aviation Limited after the resignation of the company’s then-CEO.
In the years that followed, the business continued to evolve. By February 2024 IndiGo held a dominant domestic market share in India with a fleet exceeding 350 aircraft and routes covering more than a hundred destinations, including international services. In 2022 InterGlobe Enterprises entered a logistics joint venture with UPS called Movin. In April 2024 Bhatia partnered with CP Gurnani to launch AIonOS, a venture focused on AI-powered SaaS products for travel, transportation, logistics and hospitality sectors. His hospitality arm, InterGlobe Hotels, operates a portfolio of hotels in partnership with Accor in India and internationally.
Public profile
Bhatia’s work has been recognised with industry awards, including Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (2010) and The Economic Times Entrepreneur of the Year (2011). Forbes included him in a Global Game Changers list in 2016, and InterGlobe’s growth has been noted in business coverage for reshaping air travel in India. He is known for a relatively informal personal style and for maintaining an active presence across several company boards within the InterGlobe group and related entities.
Personal life
Rahul Bhatia is married to Rohini Bhatia, who serves as chairperson of IndiGo Airlines Group’s corporate social responsibility committee. The couple have two children: a son, Arunanshu, and a daughter, Avantika. His father, Kapil Bhatia, served as Executive Chairman of InterGlobe Enterprises. Bhatia has a sister. He lists golf among his hobbies, follows a non-vegetarian diet, and is identified with the Hindu religion.
Latest updates
In recent years Bhatia navigated shifts in IndiGo’s leadership and ownership structure as co-founder Rakesh Gangwal reduced his role and sold part of his stake. In 2022 a photo of Bhatia travelling in the airline’s economy cabin drew public attention. By 2024 the group continued to expand its airline, hospitality and technology initiatives, and Bhatia moved into AI-focused services for the travel and logistics sectors.
