Early life and backgroundRahul Bose was born on 27 July 1967 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He grew up in a family that encouraged sports and the arts; his mother in particular pushed him toward athletic pursuits such as rugby and boxing. Bose attended Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and later graduated from Sydenham College. He showed an early interest in performance, taking part in school plays, and also pursued competitive sport during his student years, including rugby, boxing and cricket.
Career
Bose began his professional acting career on stage. His first notable theatre appearance came in 1989 in the play Topsy Turvey, and he went on to perform in several other stage productions including Are There Tigers in the Congo?, Art, The Square Circle and Seascape with Sharks and Dancer.
He moved into film with the 1994 Hinglish release English, August, in which he played the lead role of Agastya Sen. That film marked an early milestone: it became the first Indian film to be acquired by 20th Century Fox. Bose’s screen career has included a mix of independent and mainstream projects. He appeared in Bomgay, Bombay Boys, Split Wide Open, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii and The Japanese Wife, among others.
On television he was seen in the series A Mouthful of Sky in the mid-1990s. He made his directorial debut with Everybody Says I’m Fine in 2001, and later produced films such as Poorna: Courage Has No Limit (2017). He has also worked as a playback singer, recording the song Akashe chhorano megher for the film Anuranan.
As an actor, he earned critical recognition for his performance in Split Wide Open, winning the Silver Screen Award for Best Asian Actor at the 2000 Singapore International Film Festival. In 2020 he appeared in the Netflix original Bulbbul, playing the role of Mahendra/Indranil.
Sporting life
Bose combined his artistic career with active involvement in sport. He became part of the first Indian national rugby team that competed at the Asian Rugby Football Union Championship in 1998 and 1999, playing as a right-winger and sometimes at scrum-half. His sporting interests extended beyond rugby to boxing and cricket; he once trained under Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
Social activism and philanthropy
Alongside his work in entertainment and sport, Bose has been a visible social activist. He founded an NGO called The Foundation in 2007 and later set up Heal in 2017 to address sexual abuse of children. His activism has included involvement in campaigns and movements such as the Narmada Bachao Andolan, the World Youth Peace Summit and the Copenhagen climate summit in 2009.
