Rahul Gandhi is an Indian politician and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress. Born in New Delhi in 1970 into the Nehru–Gandhi family, he has a长

Early life and background

Rahul Gandhi was born on 19 June 1970 in New Delhi. He is a member of the Nehru–Gandhi family and was raised in the national capital. His schooling included time at St. Columba’s School and The Doon School, and, following family tragedies that affected his early education, he spent periods of home schooling. He pursued higher studies internationally, attending institutions including Harvard, Rollins College in Florida where he completed a Bachelor of Arts, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned an M.Phil in economics.

He is identified culturally as Hindu and is reported to belong to the Kashmiri Brahmin (Dattatreya) community. His heritage is described as both Indian and Italian. Physically, he is listed at about 5 feet 7 inches tall with dark brown hair and eyes.

Career

Rahul Gandhi’s public political career has been anchored in the Indian National Congress (INC). He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 from the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Over the following years he moved into party organizational roles, being appointed general secretary of the All India Congress Committee in 2007 and taking responsibility for the student and youth wings of the party. He retained the Amethi seat in 2009 and again contested it in 2014.

In January 2013 he was elevated to vice-president of the Congress party and later, on 11 December 2017, he was chosen as party president. After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which he lost Amethi but won Wayanad in Kerala, he resigned as Congress president on 3 July 2019 and made that resignation public, accepting political responsibility for the poll outcome.

Rahul Gandhi has been a high-profile parliamentary figure. In March 2023, following a criminal defamation conviction in a case arising from a 2019 remark, he was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha; subsequent legal developments, including an appeal and a Supreme Court stay of the conviction in August 2023, led to the revocation of that disqualification by the Lok Sabha secretariat on 7 August 2023. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he contested and won two seats: Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh) and Wayanad (Kerala). He later vacated the Wayanad seat and on 25 June 2024 the Congress party named him Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Public profile

Rahul Gandhi is widely recognised by the nickname RaGa and has been one of the most visible opposition leaders to the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His public remarks and political positions have frequently attracted media attention and controversy. Over time he has faced criticism for several statements and actions that have provoked political and legal responses, including arrests, criminal complaints and defamation suits. One of the highest-profile legal matters involved the so-called ‘Modi surname’ defamation case, which produced a conviction in March 2023, a sequence of appeals and stays, and extensive reporting through 2023 and 2024.

His activism has included on-the-ground engagements such as protests with farmers and a long-distance movement known as the Bharat Jodo Yatra, during which remarks he made prompted official notices and legal queries. He has also been involved in litigation and investigations relating to the National Herald property and financing matters.

Personal notes and interests

Publicly listed personal details include hobbies such as reading, travelling and diving, and a reported preference for non-vegetarian food. His recorded places of education and residence tie him closely to New Delhi, and his family background connects him to a well-known political lineage with ancestral links noted outside India.

Latest updates

Legal processes related to earlier convictions and defamation cases continued through 2023 and 2024, including a Supreme Court stay that affected his parliamentary status earlier in 2023.
