Rahul Suresh Narwekar was born on 11 February 1977 in Colaba, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in the same neighborhood that remains listed as his hometown. Narwekar completed higher education at Mumbai University, earning a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws. His father, Suresh Narvekar, served as a municipal councillor; two of his siblings, Makarand and Harshita Narwekar, have also been involved in municipal-level politics.

Career

Narwekar began his political life with Shiv Sena, rising from party worker to a youth-wing spokesperson. After being denied a ticket for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he left Shiv Sena and joined the Nationalist Congress Party the same year. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from the Maval constituency but did not win.

In 2014 he became a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council through a gubernatorial nomination, a position he held until 2019. In 2019 Narwekar switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party and won the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly seat from the Colaba constituency.

On 3 July 2022 he was elected Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, receiving 164 votes to his opponent’s 107. At the time of that election he was noted as one of the youngest state assembly speakers in the country. In December 2024 he was again elected unopposed as Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
