Rahul Ramakrishna, Biography
Actor, writer and comedian Rahul Ramakrishna rose from theatre workshops and short films to notable roles in Telugu cinema, earning awards for his comic,
Early life and backgroundRahul Ramakrishna was born on 15 January 1991 in Hyderabad. He grew up in the city and identifies Hyderabad as his hometown. He enrolled in engineering but left in his final year, describing himself as not suited to that course. After leaving college he supported himself through a variety of jobs, including data‑entry work and writing reviews, and spent time working with newspapers and an NGO where he worked with marginalized communities.
His interest in performance grew out of involvement with local theatre. Before college he worked backstage for small theatre groups, and later he attended Forum Theatre workshops that introduced him to acting and helped launch his onstage career.
Career
Ramakrishna began his screen career with the short film Sainma, directed by Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam. He also wrote the song "Merise Merise" for that short. He made his Telugu feature debut in Jayammu Nischayammu Raa (2016), a film for which he contributed not only as an actor but also as the dialogue writer.
His breakthrough came with the 2017 film Arjun Reddy, in which he played Shiva, the friend of the lead character. That performance brought him wider recognition across the Telugu film industry. In subsequent years he appeared in a range of commercially successful and critically noticed films, including Chi La Sow (2018), Brochevarevarura (2019), Pressure Cooker (2020), and Jathi Ratnalu (2021). He was also among the cast of the pan‑Indian blockbuster RRR, which achieved a substantial worldwide box office total.
Beyond acting, Rahul has worked as a dialogue writer and lyricist to supplement his income. He contributed three songs to the film Pelli Choopulu and has been credited with writing lyrics and dialogues on other projects. He has also worked on television as the host of the Telugu cooking show Wow Emi Ruchi.
Awards and recognition
Ramakrishna has received formal recognition for his comic performances. He won the Best Comedian (Telugu) award at the South Indian International Movie Awards in 2018 for Arjun Reddy, and the Best Comedian Award at the Zee Cine Awards in 2020 for Brochevarevarura. He earned a Filmfare Awards South nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Telugu) in 2019 for Geetha Govindam and a 2021 SIIMA nomination for Best Comedian for Brochevarevarura.
Public profile
Rahul is known for a candid public persona. He has spoken publicly about difficult personal experiences, including childhood sexual abuse, and received support from fans and colleagues after disclosing that trauma. He has also been open about the ups and downs of his career; for example, following the poor reception of the film Mithai in 2019 he stepped away from Twitter for a time.
In interviews and social posts he has displayed a dry sense of humor. At one point in 2022 he tweeted that he was retiring from films, later clarifying the announcement as a prank and removing the posts. He has shared small personal details publicly—he enjoys reading, favors green tea, cites author Terry Pratchett among his favourites, and describes himself wryly as an "imaginary bass player" with a short temper who can cook decent sambar.
Personal life
Rahul is Indian by nationality. His mother, Sheela Mamidenna, is an author; his father’s name is not publicly listed in the available material. He has identified as engaged, with his fiancée named Haritha. Previously he had been linked to a relationship with a software professional named Bindu. He has described his educational background as an engineering drop‑out.
