Early life and background

Rahul Ramakrishna was born on 15 January 1991 in Hyderabad. He grew up in the city and identifies Hyderabad as his hometown. He enrolled in engineering but left in his final year, describing himself as not suited to that course. After leaving college he supported himself through a variety of jobs, including data‑entry work and writing reviews, and spent time working with newspapers and an NGO where he worked with marginalized communities.

His interest in performance grew out of involvement with local theatre. Before college he worked backstage for small theatre groups, and later he attended Forum Theatre workshops that introduced him to acting and helped launch his onstage career.

Ramakrishna began his screen career with the short film Sainma, directed by Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam. He also wrote the song "Merise Merise" for that short.
