Rahul Subramanian Biography

Indian stand-up comedian Rahul Subramanian is best known for his crowd-work performances in clubs, bars and live shows. He transitioned from a corporate营销/

Early life and background

Rahul Subramanian was born on 10 May 1988 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and grew up in a middle-class family. He identifies as Tamilian and lists Tamil Nadu as his hometown. From an early age he showed a quick sense of humour that drew positive attention from friends and teachers, and he also played football through school and college, representing his college team.

Education and early career

Rahul completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology at Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT), Chembur (2003–2007). He later earned an MBA in Marketing from the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad (2009–2011). After completing his studies he entered the corporate world, working in sales and digital roles. His early positions included sales manager at Convonix Inc., and a short stint as Business Development Manager at Bare Associates International.

He joined Mahindra Retail after a summer internship and rose to e-commerce manager in January 2012, where he launched the company’s e-commerce channel and handled digital marketing and customer retention. In mid-2013 he left that role and went on to work at Mahindra Rise in Mumbai for about three years, managing corporate branding and digital marketing and contributing to responsibilities around the Mahindra mother brand.

Career

Parallel to his corporate career, Rahul pursued stand-up comedy, beginning with stage shows and open-mic nights during college and on days off while working. At Mahindra he met fellow comedian Kumar Varun and together they launched a comedy collective and YouTube channel called Random Chikibum in 2015. That same year the duo won OML’s Comedy Hunt, a competition run in partnership with established comics and platforms, which led to professional opportunities in comedy.

After the competition win Rahul received offers related to YouTube comedy productions and chose to leave the corporate world to focus on comedy full time. He won additional stand-up contests organized by venues such as Virgin Pants and Canvas Laugh Club and became known for crowd-work—unscripted, improvised interactions with live audiences.

His long-form crowd-work show Kal Main Udega is a one-hour solo set built around impromptu engagement with audiences, and it toured major Indian cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. That format later became the basis for a crowd-work special released by Amazon Prime Video.

Rahul’s screen credits include appearances on Amazon Prime Video’s Comicstaan (2018) and Comedy Premium League (2021), a role in the Amazon series Pushpavalli (2017) as Lakshman, and a small role in a 2017 short film. He has also been seen on the Amazon improv special Improv All Stars: Games Night (2018), the MX Player series Kiski Sarkar (2019), and various episodes connected with the comedy collective All India Bakchod. In 2020 he toured a crowd-work show called You & Me.

In March 2023 Amazon Prime Video released Rahul Talks to People, a crowd-work special directed by Biswa Kalyan Rath and produced by OML. The program features Rahul conducting unrehearsed conversations with different groups across several cities and converting everyday topics into comedic material for both live audiences and viewers.

Public profile

Rahul’s stage approach emphasizes spontaneity; he has described a habit of remaining blank for the first few seconds on stage, using that moment to tune into the audience and respond in the moment. He admires American comedian Brian Regan and does not rely on pre-show rituals. He performs regularly at comedy clubs and has delivered crowd-work sets at venues including That Comedy Club and Tuning Fork Comedy Club.

Personal life

Rahul is married to Sonica Subramanian, who works in the corporate sector. He follows a vegetarian diet, supports Liverpool Football Club, enjoys masala dosa and coffee, and is fond of animals; he has a pet dog named Arya. He is active on social media and has noted that he joined platforms largely because of external pressure, though he does maintain a presence. He practices a devotional faith in Lord Ganesha and is not particularly superstitious about pre-show routines.

Latest updates
