Early life and backgroundRaj Babbar was born on 23 June 1952 in Tundla, Uttar Pradesh. He attended local schools in Agra before graduating from Agra College and receiving formal acting training at the National School of Drama in New Delhi and the Method School of Acting. He is identified with the Sonar community (Other Backward Caste) and follows Hinduism.
Career
Babbar began his film career in the late 1970s with a supporting role in the 1977 Hindi film Kissa Kursi Ka. Over the following decades he developed a presence across Hindi, Punjabi and regional cinema, with notable early work including roles in films such as Insaaf Ka Tarazu (1980), Kalyug (1981) and Nikaah (1981). He also worked in Punjabi cinema, appearing in films including Chann Pardesi (1980) and a number of later Punjabi titles.
His screen work extended to television, where he portrayed historical and mythological figures. Roles on TV include Akbar in Bahadur Shah Zafar (1986), Bharata in the 1988 television adaptation of the Mahabharata, a narration role in Maharaja Ranjit Singh (2010), and a part in the serial Pukaar - Call For The Hero (2014). His career also includes appearances in other Hindi films across many years, including titles as recent as Bodyguard (2011).
Alongside acting, Babbar established a production presence by founding Babbar Films Pvt. Ltd., a company he created with his brother Kishan.
Political life
Raj Babbar moved into politics in 1989 when he joined Janata Dal. He later became associated with the Samajwadi Party from 1989 until 2008 and subsequently joined the Indian National Congress in 2008. His parliamentary career includes terms in both houses: he served in the Rajya Sabha between 1994 and 1999 and was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004. In 2009 he won a parliamentary seat by defeating Dimple Yadav. He contested several high-profile elections, including running against Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lucknow in 1996. He lost the 2014 Lok Sabha election in Ghaziabad to V. K. Singh and in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he was defeated in the Gurgaon constituency by Rao Inderjeet Singh of the BJP by a margin of 75,079 votes. In March 2018 he resigned as President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.

He married Nadira Babbar in November 1975; the couple have three children who have worked in films: Juhi Babbar, Arya Babbar and Prateik Babbar. He was previously involved with the late actress Smita Patil, with whom he had a child. His family background includes parents Kushal Kumar Babbar and Shobarani Babbar and several siblings.
