Early life and background

Raj Kumari Nikhanj was born Raj Kumari Lajwanti in 1924 in Pakpattan, a town associated with the Sufi saint Baba Farid in what is now Punjab, Pakistan. She grew up in a middle-class family and later married Ram Lal Nikhanj, a teak merchant. The couple initially settled in Shah Yakka, Okara, where they began raising a family.

After the 1947 Partition of India, Raj Kumari and her husband relocated to Fazilka in Indian Punjab. While living there she gave birth to two sons. The family later moved to Chandigarh, where they resided in Sector 16 and where Raj Kumari’s youngest son, Kapil Dev, was born in 1959.

Family life and personal details

Raj Kumari was the mother of seven children: four daughters and three sons. Her daughters were named Naresh, Manju, Neeru, and Pinky Gill. Her sons were Ramesh Kumar Nikhanj, Bhushan Nikhanj, and Kapil Dev. Her husband, Ram Lal Nikhanj, died in 1975, after which Raj Kumari raised the seven children on her own.

Known as a devoted homemaker, she enjoyed cooking and was remembered by family members for her warmth and care. She had brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. She was known within the family for affectionate nicknames, and Kapil Dev was reportedly called "Kuckoo" by his mother.

Career

Raj Kumari’s primary role was that of a homemaker and family matriarch. She is publicly known because of her relationship to her son Kapil Dev, who became one of India’s most celebrated cricketers. Accounts from family and those close to Kapil describe her as a significant influence on his early years, providing practical care and encouragement as he pursued cricket.

Public profile

Kapil Dev has written about his mother in his autobiography Straight from the Heart, describing her as a central figure in his upbringing and a source of strength during his youth. Others connected with Kapil’s early cricketing life recalled small but meaningful habits—such as insisting he drink buttermilk—that reflected the supportive role she played.

Her presence in the public narrative around Kapil’s rise became most visible on milestone occasions. When India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 under Kapil’s captaincy, Raj Kumari marked the occasion by distributing sweets to friends and well-wishers, a gesture recalled by relatives.

Death and legacy

Raj Kumari Nikhanj died on 14 June 2009 at her residence in Sector 27, Chandigarh, at around 5 a.m. She was 85 years old and had been coping with health problems prior to her death. Her funeral was held the same day at the Sector 25 cremation ground in Chandigarh. Those who attended included family friends and figures connected to Kapil’s cricketing life, reflecting the respect shown to her as the mother of a national sports figure.

Kapil Dev and others who knew the family have described Raj Kumari as a ‘‘pillar of strength’’ whose domestic care and encouragement helped shape the early development of one of India’s leading fast bowlers. Her memory is preserved in family recollections and in Kapil’s own writings, where he speaks of her affection, cooking, and guidance during his formative years.
