Early life and background

Raj Singh Chaudhary was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal, and raised in a family headed by his father Mangal Singh Chaudhary. He attended Goethals Memorial School in Kurseong and later studied at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram in New Delhi. He completed a degree in software engineering from B.M.S. College of Engineering, Bengaluru, in 1995.

Chaudhary started modelling during his college years. Tall and athletic, he had played tennis and finished as the runner-up in the Gladrags Manhunt contest, which led to work in print and television advertising. After graduation he tried his hand at business, opening a software company with two friends; when that venture failed he returned to his family home in Kolkata and soon shifted focus toward the creative industries.

Career

A workshop in Mumbai and an early advertisement that impressed a director set Chaudhary on a path to film. His first acting assignment came in the feature Kuch Naa Kaho. He also appeared in Black Friday, a film based on the 1993 bombings, and went on to write stories that were adapted for the screen, including material that formed the basis of No Smoking.

Chaudhary wrote the story for and played the role of Raghuveer in Gulaal, a project that raised his profile and drew praise for his performance. He continued to take on acting assignments in films that addressed social themes, including Antardwand, a film about forced marriages in parts of Bihar that went on to win a National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues.
