Early life and background
Rajesh “Raj” Subramaniam was born on September 14, 1967, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He grew up in that city and attended Loyola School until tenth grade. At 15 he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) and completed his higher secondary education at the SIES Group of Institutions.

He went on to study engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, graduating in 1987. Afterward he moved to the United States to pursue graduate study, earning a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1989 and an MBA in marketing and finance from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991.

Career
Subramaniam joined FedEx in 1991 as a marketing analyst in Memphis, Tennessee. Over the following three decades he advanced through a sequence of senior assignments across the company’s global operations.

In 1996 he was named Vice President of Marketing for the Asia Pacific region at FedEx Express, a role he held until 2003. He later served as Regional President in Canada and moved into senior corporate roles at FedEx Services, becoming Senior Vice President in 2006.

In February 2013 he was elevated to Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communication at FedEx Corporation. In January 2019 he was appointed President and CEO of FedEx Express, and two months later became President and Chief Operating Officer of FedEx Corporation.

During his time in leadership, Subramaniam led initiatives to expand the company’s e-commerce business and to drive operational and digital transformation across FedEx’s businesses. He joined the FedEx board of directors in 2020.

On June 1, 2022, Subramaniam succeeded Frederick W. Smith as CEO of FedEx Corporation, with Smith moving to the role of Executive Chairman. As CEO, Subramaniam is responsible for setting strategic direction across the company’s operating entities, including FedEx Express, FedEx Services, FedEx Office, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Logistics and FedEx Dataworks. He also serves on the company’s Executive Committee and the Strategic Management Committee.
