Early life and backgroundRajat Bedi was born on 1 January 1970 in Mumbai, where he continues to be based. He comes from a family connected to the arts: his father, Narendra Bedi, worked in filmmaking and his grandfather, Rajinder Singh Bedi, was an established Urdu writer. Rajat’s siblings include Manek Bedi, who has worked as an actor and producer, and Ila Bedi Dutta, a writer and film producer.
Career
Rajat Bedi began his public career in modelling, winning the Gladrags Manhunt Contest India in 1994 and representing India at the Manhunt International pageant that year, where he placed as fourth runner-up. Before securing acting assignments, he worked in films as a body double for Shah Rukh Khan on projects such as Karan Arjun and Duplicate.
His on-screen acting debut came in Hindi cinema with 2001: Do Hazaar Ek (1998). Over the next several years he appeared in a string of Hindi films, including International Khiladi (1999), Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahaani (2002), Maa Tujhhe Salaam (2002), Chor Machaaye Shor (2002), Rocky – The Rebel (2006) and Partner (2007). He is best known for the role of Raj Saxena in Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), a film that increased his visibility even though he later said several of his scenes were cut and he was not part of the film’s promotional efforts.
Bedi has taken on varied character work, including parts in Rakht (2004) as ACP Ranbir Singh and a praised turn as Varun in Khamoshh... Khauff Ki Raat (2005). He has also worked in other Indian film industries: a Tamil role in Gajendra (2004), a Punjabi role in Lakh Pardesi Hoiye (2008), and a more recent Telugu appearance in Ahimsa (2023). In 2016 he played a negative role in the Kannada film Jaggu Dada, and in 2023 he appeared in the Punjabi film Gol Gappe as Pali, a remake of the Malayalam film Ramji Rao Speaking.
Beyond acting, Bedi moved into production and business. In 2007 he established a real estate construction company in Canada called Kraftsmen Holdings Ltd. He made his production debut in television with Lajwanti (2015), an adaptation of the novel written by his grandfather. In 2017 he and his sister Ila Bedi Dutta founded Triflix Entertainment LLP. He also co-produced the Bollywood film The Diplomat in 2024 with T-Series and Wakaoo Films.
