Rajat Patidar Biography

Indian top-order batsman Rajat Manohar Patidar rose from Madhya Pradesh domestic cricket to the international stage and the IPL with Royal Challengers Bang

Early life and background
Rajat Manohar Patidar was born on 1 June 1993 in Sarjapur, Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He grew up in Indore, attended New Digamer Public School and later graduated from Guru Vashishtha College, Dewas. Patidar began playing cricket at a young age and progressed through local tournaments before entering the domestic system.

Patidar’s family initially wanted him to pursue formal education and join the family business, but he convinced them to let him continue with cricket. His father, Manohar Patidar, worked in the agricultural pumps trade, and his mother is Rekha Patidar. He has an elder sister named Aarti and one brother. Off the field, Patidar enjoys travelling, cycling and playing golf, and he keeps pet dogs.

Career
Patidar is a right-handed batsman who also bowls occasional right-arm off break. He started his representative career in age-group and club cricket for Vijay Cricket Club, Indore, and played for various Madhya Pradesh youth sides before breaking into the senior state setup.

He made his first-class debut for Madhya Pradesh in the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy on 30 October 2015 against Baroda, scoring 60 in his debut innings and following that with a century in the second innings. His List A debut came on 11 December 2015 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Saurashtra, where he produced a lively half-century. Patidar’s T20 debut for Madhya Pradesh arrived in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 8 January 2018.

Patidar’s domestic timeline includes appearances for Madhya Pradesh at multiple age levels and representative teams such as Madhya Pradesh Under-19, Under-22 and Under-23, Indore, the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association XI, Indian Board President’s XI, India Blue and India B. His rise in domestic cricket earned him attention from Indian Premier League franchises.

Indian Premier League and defining moments
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) signed Patidar in the 2021 IPL auction at his base price. He made his IPL debut for RCB on 9 April 2021. After a brief period out of the auction spotlight in 2022, RCB brought him back midseason and he seized a career-defining moment on 25 May 2022: in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants he compiled an unbeaten 112 off 54 balls to steer his side into the next round. That innings made him the first uncapped player to score a century in an IPL playoff match.

Injury setbacks and recovery
Patidar’s career has included injury interruptions. In 2014 he suffered an ACL injury that kept him out for around a year. Later, an Achilles heel problem ruled him out of the 2023 IPL season and required surgery. Despite these setbacks he returned to competitive cricket and continued to build his profile.

International recognition
Patidar earned selection for India and made his One Day International debut on 21 December 2023 against South Africa at Boland Park, Paarl, scoring 22 off 16 deliveries. He made his Test debut on 2 February 2024 against England at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. In that England series he played three Tests and scored 63 runs at an average of 10.50. As of March 2024 he and teammate Avesh Khan were awarded BCCI central contracts in the C-category, becoming the first players from Madhya Pradesh to receive central contracts from the board.

Style and influences
A top-order batter by trade, Patidar has been noted for his stroke-making ability and adaptability across formats. He has worked with coaches and mentors including Ram Atre, Amay Khurasiya and Chandrakant Pandit, and earned praise from senior players and staff during RCB training camps. Among his cricketing favourites are Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara.

Public profile
Patidar maintains a public presence across social media. He is identifiable to fans through his playing number, wearing #87 for India and domestically, while sporting #97 (previously #19) in the IPL. Off the field he has visible tattoos on his left arm, enjoys football—supporting Manchester United—and admires Cristiano Ronaldo.

Personal life
Patidar married Gunjan Patidar on 7 July 2022. The couple had postponed their original wedding plans so he could participate in the 2022 IPL season. He follows Hinduism.

Latest updates
In early 2024 Patidar transitioned from domestic standout to an international cricketer with appearances in both ODI and Test formats. The BCCI central contract awarded in March 2024 marked a notable milestone for him and for cricketers from Madhya Pradesh.

Patidar continues to build his career after recovery from injury and remains part of RCB’s squad through the 2024 season, while representing Madhya Pradesh in domestic competition.
