Early life and backgroundRajat Tokas was born on 19 July 1991 in Munirka, Delhi. Raised in a middle-class family, he attended Hope Hall Foundation School in Delhi and completed his graduation through correspondence. He grew up in Delhi and holds Indian nationality. From childhood he had an interest in films and once imagined becoming a film director.
Career
Tokas began working in television as a child artist. His earliest recorded TV appearance was in the serial Bongo (1999/2004 as a child actor) and he rose to wide recognition after playing the young Prithviraj Chauhan in the Star Plus historical drama Dharti Ka Veer Yodha Prithviraj Chauhan. That early success led to further child-artist awards and established him as a familiar face in television historicals.
Across his career he has taken on several period and mythological roles. He appeared in Dharam Veer (as Veer), played Tantya — the brother of Shirdi’s Sai Baba — in Sai Baba, and took the title role of Chandragupta Maurya in Chandra Nandini. One of his most notable portrayals came as Emperor Akbar in Zee TV’s Jodha Akbar, a performance that brought him strong audience appreciation and multiple awards.
Tokas has also worked in other TV shows including Keshav Pandit, Tere Liye, Bandini and the supernatural series Naagin, where he featured as a wishful mongoose in the first season and as a wishful serpent in the third season. He has appeared in several films — Kathputli, W.H.O., Prerna and Stumped — though those projects did not make a significant impact at the box office.
To prepare for demanding historical roles he has undertaken specific training: learning horse riding and weapon handling, adjusting his voice and body language, and researching historical records and documentaries to better inhabit characters such as Chandragupta Maurya.
Public profile
Tokas’s work on television has been recognized with a string of industry awards. Early in his career he received accolades for his performances in Dharti Ka Veer Yodha Prithviraj Chauhan, including Indian Telly Awards and a Star Parivaar Award. His portrayal of Akbar in Jodha Akbar earned him several honors as well, such as the BIG Star Entertainment Award and Indian Telly and Star Guild awards for best actor in a leading role. He later won a Star Parivaar Award in recognition of his role in Chandra Nandini.
Outside of acting, he lists hobbies such as swimming, playing football and horse riding. He is a dog lover and owns a pet named Leo. Tokas has described himself as shy and having had only a few close friends during his youth.
