Early life and background

Rajdeep Dilip Sardesai was born on 24 May 1965 in Mumbai, where he also grew up. He attended Campion School and The Cathedral & John Connon School before pursuing higher studies at St. Xavier's College and later at University College, Oxford. His formal qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Civil Law. Rajdeep is the son of former Indian Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai. He is Indian by nationality and is identified with the Hindu faith.

Career

Sardesai began his professional life in print journalism, spending six years with the Times of India and rising to become the city editor of its Mumbai edition. He moved into television journalism in 1994 when he joined New Delhi Television (NDTV) as Political Editor. At NDTV he anchored high-profile programmes, including the widely watched debate show The Big Fight.

Later he left NDTV to co-found Global Broadcast News (GBN), a venture formed in collaboration with CNN and TV18. GBN operated multiple channels including CNN-IBN, IBN7 and IBN-Lokmat. He served as Editor-in-Chief of that group until his resignation in July 2014. Sardesai has also worked as a consulting editor at the India Today group and has hosted shows for Headlines Today.

Over the years he has won several awards and recognitions for his journalism. These include the Padma Shri, awarded by the Government of India in 2008, the International Broadcasters award for his coverage of the 2002 Gujarat riots, the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism award for 2006 and an Asian Television award for talk show presentation. He has been recognised repeatedly by the Indian Television Academy as News Anchor of the Year and has served as President of the Editors Guild of India. He was also chosen as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum.
