Rajeev Verma was born on 28 June 1949 in Hoshangabad (now Narmadapuram), Madhya Pradesh. He grew up with roots in Bhopal, which is also cited as his hometown. His father, Babulal Verma, was described as a freedom fighter. Verma pursued formal training in architecture, earning a bachelor’s degree from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in urban design from Delhi’s School of Planning and Architecture.

Verma began his professional life outside the entertainment industry, working as a government employee before moving into acting and theatre. His early involvement in the performing arts came through local theatre in Bhopal. He worked with a theatre group there and later with Bhopal Theatres, taking on directing duties as well as acting. Verma’s film career began with a role in the 1989 film Maine Pyar Kiya.
