Early life and background

Rajesh Madhavan was born on 1 November 1986 in Kolathur (also spelt Kolthur), a village in Kasaragod district, Kerala. He is the son of Madhavan, who worked as a labourer, and Ratnavathi, a homemaker. He grew up in Kasaragod and completed schooling at G. H. S. S. Kundamkuzhy. He later earned a master's degree in visual media.

Career

Madhavan’s entry into performance began in theatre, a medium he cites as the foundation of his acting skills. He appeared in stage productions including A Very Normal Family, a dark comedy directed by Roshan Mathew, in which he performed a role inspired by Maheshinte Prathikaaram. His theatre background informed his screen work, particularly his ability to convey emotion through expressive features.

On screen, he first worked behind the camera as an assistant director and in casting. Early crew credits include assistant directing on the Malayalam film Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017) and casting work on projects such as Jump Cuts: An Anthology of Shorts (2019) and Madappally United (2021). He served as chief casting director for Nna Thaan Case Kodu (2022). In 2022 he announced that he would make his directorial debut with the film Pennum Porattam.

As an actor, Madhavan’s film debut came with a small appearance as a cycle boy in Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016). He went on to take supporting roles in notable Malayalam films, including Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25 (2019), Minnal Murali (2021), Prappeda (Hawk’s Muffin) (2022), Nna Thaan Case Kodu (2022), Christy (2023), and Kallanum Bhagavathiyum (2023). His performance as Shankaran Namboodiri in Madanolsavam (2023) was particularly well received.

Madhavan’s screen career also includes work in commercials and television earlier in his career, and he has continued to alternate between acting, casting responsibilities, and production roles.

Public profile

Madhavan is known for a lean physicality and expressive eyes, attributes he says come from his theatre training rather than any deliberate effort to accentuate them. He has spoken about facing personal challenges early on—his father had envisioned a business-oriented path for him, but language barriers affected his pursuit of an MBA—and ultimately gravitating toward visual media and the performing arts.

He remains unmarried. His immediate family includes his parents and two sisters, Raji and Sreeji. He is Indian by nationality and is identified with the Scorpio zodiac sign. His listed height is approximately 170 cm (5'7"), with dark brown eyes and light ash brown hair.

Latest updates

In September 2023 Madhavan received recognition at the South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) where he won the Best Comedian (Malayalam) award. In 2022 he revealed plans to step into direction with Pennum Porattam. In May 2023 he posted content on social media that prompted public attention, including a video titled "Save the Date" featuring actress Chithra Nair and a post that appeared to show a wedding invitation, which generated widespread discussion online.

Madhavan continues to work across acting and off-camera roles in Malayalam cinema, building on a career that moves between theatre roots, casting and assistant directing, and supporting and comic performances on screen.
