Early life and background

Rajiv Krishan Luthra was born on 1 August 1957 in New Delhi into a family with a military background. He completed his schooling at several institutions, including The Air Force School, Air Force Bal Bharati School, St. Xavier’s High School and Methodist High School. After finishing high school he qualified as a Chartered Accountant through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and later studied law at Delhi University. He also pursued post‑graduate law courses at Harvard Law School.

Career

Luthra began his professional life working in his father’s firm where he managed financial affairs for more than seven years before turning to legal studies. He first entered business outside the legal field by launching a travel company, and soon thereafter moved into legal practice.

In 1989 he co‑founded Luthra and Luthra – Law Offices India, a New Delhi firm that grew to handle high‑profile advisory and transactional matters. Under his leadership the firm acted on major assignments, including cross‑border and corporate transactions. Notable engagements mentioned in his career include advising on the merger between Coca‑Cola and Parle Bisleri in the early 1990s and, later, a role in advisory work connected with the 2015 merger between Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy.

Beyond his firm, Luthra held numerous directorships and advisory roles. He served as a director of Petroleum Helicopters India Private Limited, Afc Network India Private Limited, DLF Limited, Network18 Media & Investments Limited, Mylan Laboratories Limited (established in 2015), Lex & Legal Services LLP, and TV18 Broadcast Limited. In February 2023 he took on directorships at First Source Impex Private Limited and Kairos Edutech Private Limited.

Luthra maintained memberships and active involvement in many legal and policy bodies. He was associated with the Supreme Court Bar Association, the Delhi High Court and the Bar Council of Delhi, and held memberships in international organisations such as the International Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He served on committees and advisory bodies spanning legal education, competition policy, corporate social responsibility and trade policy. These included appointments to the Round Table on Legal Education, national executive committees of FICCI and CII, the Governing Body of BML Munjal University, the Advisory Boards of several national law universities and the Competition Commission of India, and high‑level government groups on trade and securities regulation.

Luthra was also involved in sports promotion: he was a director of Mashal Sports and is credited as one of the people behind the conceptualisation of the Pro Kabaddi League, which launched in 2014.

Public profile

Throughout his career Luthra received numerous awards and recognitions for his legal and leadership work. These honours included listings and rankings from legal directories and trade publications such as IFLR1000, Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500, industry awards for managing partners, business leadership recognitions, and lifetime achievement and international M&A awards. He was identified by industry lists and publications among leading lawyers and managing partners in India.

Personal life

Rajiv Luthra was married to Gayatri Luthra and was the father of two daughters, Sanaa Krishan Luthra and Arshia Krishan Luthra. His parents were Anirudhar Krishan Luthra, a retired Indian Air Force personnel, and Ved Luthra. He had a brother, Amit Luthra, who is a professional golfer, and a sister, Rashmi Uday Singh, an entrepreneur.

Later years and death

In the later phase of his career Luthra faced internal disputes at his firm that resulted in litigation and structural changes; the litigation with a former co‑founder concluded with a court decision in 2021. Parts of the firm’s litigation department later merged with another legal practice in 2022. He continued to advise government bodies and was asked to work on proposed amendments to the Copyright Act of 1957.

Rajiv Luthra died on 10 May 2023 at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after a prolonged illness. He was 65. His family cremated him in Delhi on 11 May 2023.
