Rajiv Makhni was born on 10 December 1969 in Amritsar, Punjab. Raised in a family with roots that trace across the subcontinent and beyond, his mother’s family came to India from what became Pakistan after Partition, while his father left Burma during the upheavals there and later settled in Assam.
