On 31 May 2022, while entering the school compound, Bala was shot dead in what authorities and reports described as an alleged targeted killing by terrorists. She was shot in the head at the school’s entrance gate minutes after being dropped at school by her husband and daughter. She was 36 years old at the time of her death.
