Early life and backgroundRajpal Naurang Yadav was born on 16 March 1971 in the village of Kundra, Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a large family and attended several schools in Shahjahanpur before completing his higher secondary education. For college he studied at Swami Shukdevanand Post Graduate College in Shahjahanpur and graduated with a degree in Political Science and Hindi Literature.
From an early age Yadav gravitated toward performance. He joined local theatre groups after graduation, performed in street plays and repertory productions, and received notice for his stage work. He completed a diploma at Bharatendu Academy of Dramatic Arts in Lucknow and later trained for three years at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, finishing in May 1997. Within weeks of moving to Mumbai in June 1997 he began getting work in television and then in films.
Career
Yadav started acting on television, with early credits that include a Sanskrit serial in 1992 and several Hindi serials in the late 1990s. His TV breakthrough came with the DD National series Mungeri Ke Bhai Naurangilal (1997), where he played the part of Naurangilal. He transitioned to film with a small role in Dil Kya Kare (1999) and continued to build his screen career through cameo parts and supporting roles in a string of Hindi productions.
He emerged into wider public notice with Jungle (2000), playing the character often remembered for its intensity; that period established him as an actor who could handle both comic and negative parts. Over the following decades Yadav worked across languages and industries, appearing in Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, Avadhi and English-language films. His filmography includes a mix of comic turns and character roles as well as work behind the camera as a producer; he produced the Hindi film Ata Pata Laapata (2012).
Throughout his career he has also been visible in television commercials for well-known brands. Critics and award juries have recognised his versatility: he won a Screen Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role for Jungle and received multiple nominations over the years for comic performances and popular awards, as well as state recognition with the Yash Bharati award.
Public profile
Yadav is known to audiences by the nickname Lalla and maintains a public presence on social platforms. He stands about 5'3" (161 cm), with brown eyes and dyed brown hair. His screen persona—an ability to move between broad comedy and darker character work—has won him a devoted following and many notable supporting credits in mainstream Hindi cinema.
Personal life
Rajpal Yadav has been married twice. His first marriage was in 1991; his first wife, Karuna Yadav, later died from post-pregnancy complications. He married Radha on 10 June 2003; the couple have two daughters together, Harshita and Rehanshi. A daughter from his first marriage, Jyoti, completes his immediate family. His parents are Naurang Singh Yadav and Godavari Yadav; his father worked as a farmer. He also has five brothers with whom he and his family operate local shops in their hometown.
Yadav trained for two years at the Ordnance Clothing Factory in Shahjahanpur before moving decisively into dramatic studies and theatre. Early in his career he took on challenging, low-budget projects and has described periods of extreme hardship while pursuing acting, which included long days of rural location work and little comfort.
Controversies and legal matters
Yadav has faced public legal and financial difficulties connected to a production loan taken to make Ata Pata Laapata. The film’s commercial failure led to loan default proceedings and a series of court actions. He served a brief jail period in 2013 and later had court sentences and recovery orders in subsequent years; in 2018 one court judgment included a sentence and financial penalty. In 2024, bank officials seized a paternal property in Shahjahanpur after loan repayment issues. In November 2024 he was involved in a confrontation with a journalist during publicity for a film release.
