Early life and background

Raju Punjabi was born on 5 September 1983 in Rawatsar, Hanumangarh, Rajasthan. From a young age he wanted to be a singer and began performing on stage during his college years. It was during that period, while singing Punjabi songs, that friends and teachers started calling him "Punjabi," a nickname that later became his professional surname.

Career

Raju began his musical journey performing Punjabi numbers but gradually shifted his focus to Haryanvi music, where he found his greatest success. He became known for a mix of energetic pop and traditional Haryanvi styles, and several of his tracks gained widespread popularity in the regional music scene.

His early Haryanvi breakthrough came when a song he released in 2013, "Yaar Dobara Nhi Milne," started getting play on local DJs. He collaborated frequently with well-known Haryanvi performers; a notable partnership was with Sapna Chaudhary. Their 2013 collaboration "Solid Body" proved important for his career, and the pair followed it with several other successful tracks, including "Sweety" (2016), "Laad Piya Ke" (2017), "Tu Cheez Lajawab" (2018), "Teri Hawa Kasuti Se" (2020) and "Jalebi" (2020).

Over the years he released many Haryanvi songs that became well known to regional audiences. Some of these include "Desi Desi Na Bolya Kar," "Mithi Boli," "Sandal," "Desi Brand," "Desiyan Ka Garh," "Peg Neet," and "Chand Chakori." Beyond pop and folk, he also recorded devotional songs dedicated to Lord Shiva such as "Mahadev Moh Liya," "Bhole Teri Nagari Meh," "Bam Bam Bol," and "Bhole Baba."

He contributed vocals for the Haryanvi web series "Chaudhar" in 2023 and remained active in music up to the final year of his life. His last recorded song released in 2023 was "Aapse Milke Yaara Humko Acha Laga," a Punjabi track. In September 2022 he released the Haryanvi music video "Golu Molu," which featured his younger daughter, Nobita.

Raju also appeared outside of music videos. In 2019 he and fellow Haryanvi singer KD made a guest appearance on the Punjabi talk show "KhoruPanti News With Lakha," which aired on Balle Balle TV. He had interests in acting in addition to his singing career.

Raju Punjabi stood about 165 cm (5'5") tall and had black hair and black eyes. He was an Indian national and his zodiac sign was Virgo. He was known by the earned title "DJ King." His hobbies included cooking, and he counted singer Hans Raj Hans among his musical influences.
