Rakesh Bedi Biography
Rakesh Bedi is an Indian theatre, film and television actor whose career stretches from stage beginnings in Delhi to memorable comic and supporting roles в
Early life and backgroundRakesh Bedi was born on 1 December 1954 in Karol Bagh, New Delhi. He grew up in the city and attended schools including DPS Mathura Road and Kendriya Vidyalaya Andrews Ganj. Bedi completed his college education at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College in New Delhi and went on to pursue formal acting training at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
From a young age he was drawn to performance. While still at school he won a number of mono-acting and drama competitions, experiences that convinced him to make acting his profession despite initial parental resistance. His father encouraged him to consider engineering, but Bedi ultimately followed his interest in the dramatic arts.
Career
Bedi began his career in theatre, founding the Delhi-based group Ankur Arts in 1972 and working with ensembles such as Pierrot’s Troupe and FTII’s theatre activities. He has performed in a range of stage productions, including plays titled Massage, Jab We Separated and Patte Khul Gaye, and has taken on multiple characters within single productions.
His film debut in Hindi came with Hamare Tumhare (1979). Early stage work led to opportunities in cinema after a performance that caught the attention of a producer at an FTII convocation. Across his career he has appeared in more than 150 Hindi films. Among the notable titles are Chashme Buddoor (1981), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) and Coolie No. 1 (2020).
Bedi became widely recognized for comic roles, with memorable performances in films such as Naseeb Apna Apna (1986), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Hero No. 1 (1997), Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000) and Indoo Ki Jawani (2020). He has also worked in regional cinema: his Marathi film credits include One Room Kitchen (2011) and Triple Seat (2019), and he appeared in the Gujarati film Kevi Rite Jaish (2012). In Punjabi cinema he played roles such as Karamdeen/Karam Singh in Main Tu Assi Tussi (2006).
On television, Bedi gained prominence with roles such as Raja in the comic series Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984) and the part of Dilruba in Shrimaan Shrimati (1982/1994 listings). His TV work extends across decades and includes shows like Yeh Duniya Gazab Ki (1992), Zabaan Sambhalke (1993), Yes Boss (1999) and Y.A.R.O Ka Tashan (2016). He has also hosted television programming, for example the ZeeQ show Science with Brain Café in 2012.
Adapting to new formats, Bedi has appeared in web series including F.A.T.H.E.R.S. (2017) and FATHERS Season 2 (2019), and Home Shanti (2022). He has performed in short films and independent projects such as Bonga (1976), Social Distancing (2020), Mera Number Kab Aayega (2021) and Rent (2021). In 2019 he provided the Hindi dubbing for the character Max Medici (originally played by Danny DeVito) in the film Dumbo.
Beyond acting, he has explored writing and direction, notably for the 2012 Hindi podcast series Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha. He has served as a guest lecturer at acting institutes including the North East Film Institute and CINTAA and has presented poetry at public sessions.
