Rakesh Jhunjhunwala Biography

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala (5 July 1960 – 14 August 2022) was an Indian investor, trader and businessman widely known as 'the Big Bull' of the Indian stock market

Early life and background

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born on 5 July 1960 in Hyderabad, Telangana. He completed a B.Com from Sydenham College of Commerce & Economics in Mumbai and qualified as a Chartered Accountant from The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Raised in a Marwari family, his father Radheshyamji Jhunjhunwala worked as an income tax officer and his mother Urmila Jhunjhunwala was a homemaker. Growing up, Jhunjhunwala absorbed an early interest in stocks from conversations he heard at home, and he has recounted how those childhood impressions drew him to study market behaviour.

Career

Jhunjhunwala began his investing career after finishing his formal education. He entered the market at a time when the Sensex was still in its early stages and built his reputation through a combination of long-term investments and active trading. Early successes included sizable gains in companies such as Tata Tea and Sesa Goa; later, his large purchase of Titan Ltd. shares in 2002–03 became one of the cornerstones of his portfolio. He also invested in pharmaceutical stocks such as Lupin.

He co-owned the asset management company Rare Enterprises with his wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala; the company’s name reflected the initials of the two owners. Over decades on Dalal Street, Jhunjhunwala experienced both sharp downturns and dramatic recoveries, including losses during the 2008 global recession from which he recovered much of his capital by 2012. He was widely recognised in financial media and lists of wealthy Indians, and at various points his market moves and holdings drew substantial public attention.

Beyond direct market activity, Jhunjhunwala had interests in media and entertainment. He served as chairman of Hungama Digital Media Entertainment and was credited as a co-producer on several Hindi films, including English Vinglish (2012), Shamitabh (2015) and Ki & Ka (2016). In aviation, an airline he was associated with, Akasa Air, received regulatory approval to begin commercial flights in July 2022.

Public profile

Known by the sobriquets 'the Big Bull' and 'the King of Dalal Street,' Jhunjhunwala built a public image as a confident investor with a taste for high-conviction positions. He identified Radhakishan Damani as an influence and acknowledged that learning from mistakes was central to his investment approach. Jhunjhunwala also engaged in philanthropy, stating that a substantial share of his dividend income was directed to charitable causes and expressing an intention to endow significant sums for social purposes.

He maintained a prominent personal profile: married to Rekha Jhunjhunwala since 22 February 1987, he was the father of three children — a daughter, Nishtha, and two sons, Aryaman and Aryaveer. He enjoyed reading and watching food shows, favoured dishes such as dosa and had a collection that included vehicles like a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. His residences and properties included a duplex in Malabar Hill, Mumbai, and a large holiday home in Lonavala.

Controversies and scrutiny

Jhunjhunwala’s market prominence also brought regulatory scrutiny. In 2020 he was investigated by the securities regulator over allegations related to trading in shares of Aptech, a firm associated with his family. The probe examined trading activity over a defined period and included the issuance of a show-cause notice.

Death

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala died on 14 August 2022 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. The reported cause of death was a heart attack; he was 62 years old at the time of his passing.

Latest updates

In mid-2022 the airline Akasa Air, with which Jhunjhunwala was associated, received its Air Operator Certificate, clearing the way for commercial operations. His life and role in the markets were also reflected in popular culture; an actor portrayed aspects of his experience in the television series that dramatised the Harshad Mehta era.
