Rakesh Roshan Lal Nagrath was born on 6 September 1949 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in a family already connected to the film world: his father, Roshan Lal Nagrath, and his mother, Ira Roshan, worked as music directors, and his younger brother Rajesh Roshan became a music director as well. Roshan attended Sainik School, Satara, and later studied at Nowrosjee Wadia College in Pune.
