Early life and background

Rakesh Sawant was born in Mumbai and is identified with the city as his hometown. His date of birth is recorded as 23 October, and he is Indian by nationality. Family is a visible part of his public identity: he is the younger brother of dancer and actress Rakhi Sawant, his mother was Jaya Bheda, and his step-father was Anand Sawant, a senior Mumbai police officer who died in 2012. His mother passed away in January 2023 after a battle with cancer.

Career

Sawant has worked across roles behind the camera as a director, producer, writer and music video director. He founded Jaya Films production house and Jaya Music labels around 2000 and has been active in the Hindi film industry for more than two decades. His directorial debut in film was Maut Ka Khel (2001). Subsequent directorial projects include the thriller Hello? Kaun Hai! (2006), the mystery Hot Money (2006), the Rajesh Khanna starring Wafaa (2008), and Jaanleva Black Blood (2012). He co-directed the Tamil drama Amaavasai with his sister in 2018.

As a producer he was involved in the Hindi version of the Australian action war film Battle Ground (2013) and in 2018 produced the Hindi version of The Bad Nun. He has also written screenplays, notably for Mudda 370 J&K (2019), a film he directed and for which he is credited as writer.

Between 2019 and 2022, Mudda 370 J&K became a prominent title in his filmography. The film earned him multiple festival recognitions in 2022, with awards for directing and screenplay at several international and independent festivals and a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the 4th Nepal Cultural International Film Festival.

In 2020 he wrote, directed and produced the Hindi thriller Vinash Kaal, which includes a cameo appearance by his sister. He continued in the horror-mystery vein as writer and director of The Dark Jungle (2021).

Music and digital work

Sawant has worked as a music director and choreographer and has directed numerous music videos. He launched a YouTube channel, Jaya’s Music, in 2017. On that channel he released several music videos in 2022, including Raj Barman’s Koi Yaad Aa Gaya and Mizaaj from the Love Jihad series, Aaj Kal Khab by Kumar Sanu and Mishtu Bardhan, and Lover Boy by Raju Punjabi. He directed, choreographed and in some cases wrote the story for these videos.
