Early life and background
Rakshit Shetty was born on 6 June 1983 in Mangaluru, Karnataka, and grew up between Mangaluru and nearby Udupi. He spent his childhood in an extended family environment, recalling frequent visits to his grandparents and a childhood marked by festivals, summer family gatherings and simple pleasures like picking berries on walks. As a child he took part in school plays and developed an early taste for performing; his maternal uncle’s involvement in theatre and encouragement from family members helped steer him toward stage activities from a young age.

Education and early interests
Shetty attended Mukunda Kripa School in Udupi until class 7, later moving to an English-medium high school and completing pre-university studies at MGM College, Kunjibettu, Udupi. He went on to study engineering, earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communications from N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte, Karkala. Mathematics and physics were subjects he enjoyed at school. After college he worked in Bengaluru in an IT job for about two years while beginning to make short films and connect with theatre and film artists.

Career
Rakshit Shetty’s screen career began with acting roles in Kannada films, making his film debut in Nam Areal Ond Dina (2010). He appeared in Tuglak (2012) and rose to wider attention with Simple Agi Ondh Love Story (2013), where his lead role helped the film become a box-office success.

Shetty’s breakthrough as a filmmaker came with Ulidavaru Kandanthe (2014), a neo-noir film that he wrote, directed and acted in. The movie, noted for being the first Kannada film shot entirely with sync sound, presented a layered portrayal of life in Tulu Nadu and became a cult favourite. Ulidavaru Kandanthe brought Shetty critical recognition and several awards, including state and Filmfare honours for his direction and the film.

Following that success, Shetty continued to build a varied body of work as an actor and filmmaker. He played roles in Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu (2016), a family drama in which he portrayed Shiva V. Rao; in the campus comedy Kirik Party (2016) as the mischievous engineering student Karna; and in the satirical Vaastu Prakaara (2015) as Kubera. He also appeared in Ricky (2016) and took the lead in the fantasy western Avane Srimannarayana (2019) as Inspector Narayana.

Shetty produced and acted in 777 Charlie (2022), an extended production whose shooting spanned more than five years. In that film he played Dharmaraj Dattana (Dharma), a solitary man whose life changes when he meets a puppy named Charlie. His work on 777 Charlie and other films has been recognised with a number of awards across state, national and industry ceremonies.

Public profile
Rakshit Shetty is associated with Paramvah Studios, his production and distribution company. His creative influences include filmmakers he studied closely, such as Quentin Tarantino and Indian directors like Puttanna Kanagal and Shankar Nag; he has said he learned from watching interviews and films rather than formal film school training.

His background is Tulu-speaking, and he follows Hindu traditions; he has spoken of a personal devotion to the goddess Mookambika. Shetty keeps a public profile through his films and industry work rather than through tabloids. He was engaged to actress Rashmika Mandanna in 2017; the engagement ended in 2018.
