Konidela Ram Charan Teja was born on 27 March 1985 in Chennai (then Madras), Tamil Nadu, into a family with deep roots in South Indian cinema. He is the son of veteran actor Chiranjeevi and Surekha Konidela. Several members of his extended family are also established in the film industry: he is a cousin of actor Allu Arjun and his uncles include actors Pawan Kalyan and Nagendra Babu. Ram Charan grew up watching the films of his father and uncles and adopted the childhood nickname "Cherry."

Ram Charan attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan in Chennai, Lawrence School in Lovedale, and Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet. He later enrolled at St. Mary’s College, Hyderabad for B.Com studies but left midway to pursue formal acting training. He studied at Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting academy in Mumbai and later took theater and drama training in London.
