Early life and background

Ram Nath Kovind was born on 1 October 1945 in Paraukh village, Kanpur Dehat district, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a middle-class family in a village where his family was one of a few Dalit households. His father, Maiku Lal, worked in several trades including a practice in Ayurveda and small retail, and his mother was Kalawati. Kovind attended school in the Kanpur Dehat area before moving to Kanpur city for higher education.

Kovind completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree and an LL.B. from Kanpur University. After finishing his studies he trained for civil services and moved to Delhi, where he became involved with political circles and began a legal career. He enrolled as an advocate in 1971 and later became an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court in 1978.

Career

Kovind spent the 1970s and 1980s working as a practicing lawyer in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India. Between 1977 and 1979 he served as a Central Government Advocate in the Delhi High Court and subsequently held the position of Central Government Standing Counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993. During this period he provided free legal aid to disadvantaged groups through the Free Legal Aid Society in Delhi.

His formal entry into electoral politics came in 1991 when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and contested the Lok Sabha election from Ghatampur in Uttar Pradesh; he did not win that contest and later lost an assembly bid from Bhognipur. In 1994 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh and was re-elected in 2000. As a parliamentarian he participated on multiple committees, including panels on the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, home affairs, petroleum and natural gas, social justice and empowerment, and law and justice. He also served as chairman of the Rajya Sabha House Committee.

Kovind worked on infrastructure projects for education in rural areas and used MPLAD funds for school construction in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. He served on the boards of academic institutions, including the board of management of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Lucknow, and the board of governors at the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata. In October 2002 he represented India at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Within his party, he held roles such as national spokesperson and president of the BJP’s Scheduled Castes Morcha, and he also led the All-India Koli Samaj.

In August 2015 Kovind became the Governor of Bihar. In June 2017 he was announced as the National Democratic Alliance’s nominee for the Presidential election. After the vote counting on 20 July 2017 he won the election and on 25 July 2017 he was sworn in as the 14th President of India. He served a full five-year term and left office on 24 July 2022 when the next President assumed office.
