Early life and background

Ram Nath Thakur was born on 3 March 1950 in Pitaunjhia village, now known as Karpoorigram, in Samastipur district of Bihar. He grew up in a family rooted in the region; his father was Karpoori Thakur and his mother was Phooleshwari Devi. Thakur attended Shri Shankar High School in Rasalpur, passing his tenth grade in 1966, and later studied at G.K.P.D. College, Karpoorigram under Lalit Narayan Mithila University. He has described his early years as influenced by prominent socialist leaders and by his father’s political life.

Thakur belonged to the Nai (Hajjam) community. In youth he took part in non-violent movements during the 1970s and enjoyed sports such as football and kabaddi.

Career

Ram Nath Thakur’s public life expanded after the death of his father. He served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Council from May 1988 until February 2000. During the early 1990s he held ministerial responsibility for the sugarcane industries in the Bihar government led by Lalu Prasad Yadav.

He first won election to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Samastipur constituency in 2000 and was re-elected in 2005. From November 2005 to November 2010 he served in Nitish Kumar’s cabinet, holding portfolios that included Revenue and Land Reforms, Law, and Information and Public Relations.

Thakur moved to the national stage when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar in April 2014; he was re-elected to the upper house in April 2020. Throughout his Rajya Sabha tenure he has been active across a number of parliamentary committees. His committee work has included the Committee on Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Food Processing; the Committee on Welfare of Other Backward Classes; the Committee on Defence; the Committee on Information and Communication Technology Management in Rajya Sabha; and the Committee on Ethics. He has also been a member of consultative committees for ministries such as Chemicals and Fertilizers and Civil Aviation, and has served on joint parliamentary committees including those on salaries and allowances and on the Biological Diversity (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

In 2023 Thakur introduced a Private Member’s Bill titled The Freedom of Marriage and Association and Prohibition of Crimes in the Name of Honour Bill.
