Ram Prasad Bismil Biography
Ram Prasad Bismil was an Indian revolutionary, poet and writer who helped found the Hindustan Republican Association and played a leading role in early 20s
Early life and backgroundRam Prasad Bismil was born on 11 June 1897 in Shahjahanpur, in the North-Western Provinces of British India. He grew up in a Brahmin family and received his early schooling at a local mission school and a government school in Shahjahanpur. As a child he learned Hindi at home from his father and studied Urdu with a local moulvi. He later passed his middle-school examination in first division from an English mission school.
Family life consisted of parents Murlidhar and Moolmati, a grandfather Narayan Lal, grandmother Vichita Devi and an uncle named Kalyanmal. He had two brothers, including Ramesh Singh, and five sisters, among them Shastri Devi, Brahmadevi and Bhagwati Devi. Bismil remained unmarried.
Career
Bismil emerged as an outspoken young nationalist while still a student. Influenced by Arya Samaj ideas and the writing of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, and mentored by the local preacher Swami Somdev, he turned from literary expression to active political work. An early poem written in response to the death sentence passed on fellow activist Bhai Parmanand signalled his shift from protest in verse to organized activism.
He became active in Congress circles at Lucknow in 1916–1917 and participated in demonstrations there. During this period he helped secretly publish and circulate a book on American independence titled America Ki Swatantrata Ka Itihas. That publication was later banned by provincial authorities, and distribution of the book became one of the incidents that brought him and his associates under police scrutiny.
Working with schoolteacher Pandit Genda Lal Dixit, Bismil helped form local revolutionary groups such as Matrivedi and worked to recruit and mobilize young people in districts including Etawah, Mainpuri, Agra and Shahjahanpur. He was involved in the Mainpuri Conspiracy of 1918, during which he and his associates distributed pamphlets and patriotic poems and were accused of robberies intended to raise funds for revolutionary work. After arrests and periods spent underground across parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bismil continued to write and translate political and literary works, producing a collection of poems and translating titles from Bengali and English into Hindi.
In 1921 Bismil took part in Congress activities that supported a resolution for Poorna Swaraj and worked alongside leaders such as Prem Krishna Khanna and Ashfaqulla Khan. Disillusioned with the withdrawal of the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1922, and critical of the decision to halt mass action after the Chauri Chaura episode, he moved toward organized revolutionary republicanism.
In 1923 he was among the founders of the Hindustan Republican Association. Along with colleagues including Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Dr. Jadugopal Mukherjee, he helped draft the organization’s constitution and aims. Under pen names such as Ram, Agyat and Bismil he also became known for patriotic poetry and political writing that sought to inspire direct action against colonial rule.
Public profile
Bismil combined literary activity with militant nationalism. His writings and translations appeared alongside his underground political work; he described composing poems and books while living rough in the countryside during periods of concealment. He is remembered primarily as a revolutionary leader in the years following World War I and as an important figure in the HRA’s early formation.
Death
Ram Prasad Bismil was arrested and ultimately executed by hanging on 19 December 1927 in Gorakhpur, United Provinces, British India. He was 30 years old at the time of his death.
