Early life and backgroundRam Sampath was born on 25 July 1977 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and grew up in the Chembur area of the city. He was raised in a household where both parents had an interest in music; his father is Tamil and his mother is Kannadiga. Sampath began engaging with music from a very young age — he learned Carnatic music for several years in childhood, received an LP player as a toddler, and started composing by the time he was eight. By his early teens he had decided to pursue music professionally and, while in college, played keyboards in a rock band. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and later graduated in commerce from R. A. Podar College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.
Career
Sampath’s professional life has spanned advertising, films, television and live performance. He made his first album in the mid-1990s and moved into composing jingles and scores for commercials; among the brands he has worked for are Airtel, Docomo, Thums Up, Pepsi and The Times of India. An early break came in 1994 when he composed for the Femina Miss India event.
His film work began in the early 2000s. Sampath composed for films including Let’s Talk (2002), Khakee (2004), Luv Ka The End (2011) and Delhi Belly (2011). The soundtrack for Delhi Belly brought him widespread attention, particularly the song Bhaag D.K. Bose. He has collaborated internationally as well, recording Indian versions of several songs with the Australian rock band INXS in 2008.
On television, Sampath has contributed music to shows such as Baat Ban Jaaye (1998), Satyamev Jayate (2012) and MTV Coke Studio (2013 and 2015). He has also appeared as a jury member on the inaugural season of MTV Rock On in 2009 and performed extensively on stage.
Awards and recognition
Throughout his career Sampath has received industry recognition for both film and independent work. He won Mirchi Music Awards for Best Background Score (for Delhi Belly) and for Indie Pop Song of the Year (for Satyamev Jayate). More recently he received awards as Best Music Director and distinctions for Best Music Album and Best Background Score for the film Laapataa Ladies at major Indian film award events.

He is known to enjoy reading and travelling and counts tea among his favourite beverages.
Public profile
Sampath is regarded as a versatile composer who has moved between commercial jingles, independent music and film scoring. His grandfather, T. V. Ramanujam, was involved in founding a prominent cultural venue in Mumbai, and Sampath’s early exposure to music and performance shaped his path into the industry. His work on Delhi Belly in particular made a notable cultural impact and increased his public visibility.
Controversies
In 2008 Sampath challenged what he described as unauthorised use of musical material when he brought a legal case concerning alleged similarity between a commercial jingle he had composed and songs used in the film Krazzy 4. The Bombay High Court found merit in his claim and the matter was later settled out of court with a reported settlement payment.
