Early life and background
Ram Vanji Sutar was born on 19 February 1925 in Gondur village, Dhule, then part of the Bombay Presidency in British India. His father worked as a carpenter, and early exposure to woodworking and craft influenced his path toward three-dimensional art. He completed primary schooling in his native village before moving to Mumbai to study at the Sir J. J. School of Art, where he earned a degree in sculpture and received a gold medal for modelling at the end of his course. Shriram Krishna Joshi served as an important early mentor, encouraging his interest in drawing and painting.

Career
Sutar began his professional life in the mid-1950s. After finishing his formal education, he worked on conservation and renovation projects at the Ajanta and Ellora sites from 1954 to 1958. He then accepted a government position in Delhi as a technical assistant (model) in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, but left that post in 1959 to pursue an independent career as a sculptor.

One of his early notable public commissions was the Chambal Monument at the Gandhi Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh, a 45-metre work that drew praise from India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Over subsequent decades Sutar became particularly well known for his sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi. His busts and full-figure representations of Gandhi in meditation have been installed in prominent locations, including outside India’s Parliament House and in Gandhinagar. Replicas and casts of his Gandhi sculptures have been presented by the Government of India to institutions and governments around the world.

Sutar’s portfolio expanded to include very large monuments. He was the designer of the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, a monumental representation of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel that rises to 182 metres. Constructed in bronze, the statue was inaugurated on 31 October 2018 and is described in the record as the tallest statue in the world. The Statue of Unity’s reported cost exceeds $33 million.

Honours
Sutar’s contributions to sculpture and public art have been recognised by the Indian state. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

Public profile
Throughout his career Sutar has been associated with public, commemorative works and with the creation of figurative sculptures that are reproduced in multiple locations. He has a reputation for realistic, large-scale statuary and for works that engage with modern India’s historical figures. His childhood recollection of seeing Mahatma Gandhi has been noted as a formative impression that resurfaced in his lifelong artistic focus.
