Early life and background
Rama Rajamouli was born on 15 July 1969 in Hyderabad (then part of Andhra Pradesh). Raised in Hyderabad, she is known by the nickname Chinni. Her family background includes one elder sister, M. M. Srivalli. Rama's personal life includes a son, S. S. Karthikeya, from a previous marriage and an adopted daughter, S. S. Mayookha.

Career
Rama began working as a costume designer in the Telugu film industry in the early 2000s. Her first film credit as a costume designer is Student No: 1 (2001). Early in her career she also appeared on television as a news presenter on the Gemini TV series Amrutham in 2001.

Over the next two decades she built a reputation for designing costumes on major Telugu productions. Her film credits include Simhadri (2003), Sye (2004), Chatrapathi (2005), Vikramarkudu (2006), Yamadonga (2007), Magadheera (2009), Maryada Ramanna (2010), Eega (2012), and the pan-Indian epic Baahubali: The Beginning (2015). The Baahubali project brought her international recognition and led to award nominations for her costume work.

Her designs for Baahubali: The Beginning drew inspiration from Indian historical and mythological imagery, including the visual traditions found in Amar Chitra Katha comics and Chandamama stories, which she cited as sources of reference while creating the film’s looks. She continued to work on the Baahubali franchise, designing costumes for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, and later received a nomination at the 12th Asian Film Awards for Best Costume Design for that film.

Rama also played a central role in styling the costumes for the 2022 period action drama RRR. In addition to costume design, she contributed as an additional dialogue writer on RRR. The international attention on RRR included acclaim for the costumes used in the song Naatu Naatu, which reached a wide audience following the song’s award at the Academy Awards in March 2023.
