Ramanand Sagar was born Chandramauli Chopra on 29 December 1917 in Asal Guru Ke, Lahore, in what was then British India. He grew up in a family with roots that traced to Kashmir and later attended the University of Punjab, where he earned gold medals in Sanskrit and Persian in 1942. His maternal grandmother gave him the name Ramanand Sagar during his childhood.

Before entering films, Sagar worked a variety of humble jobs and pursued literary interests. As a teenager he wrote poetry and later authored a book titled Aur Insaan Mar Gaya in 1948. He also edited the newspaper Daily Milap and wrote short stories, novels, plays and screenplays.

Career

Sagar’s entry into the film world began early: he worked as a clapper boy on the 1932 silent film Raiders of the Rail Road. After the Partition of India in 1947 he spent time working at Prithvi Theatre as an assistant manager. His first credited work as a screenwriter was for the Raj Kapoor film Barsaat (1949). He made his directorial debut in films with Mehmaan (1953) and went on to establish his own production company, Sagar Art Private Limited, in 1950.

Over the following decades he built a multifaceted career as a writer, director and producer. He wrote for and produced films across genres and was recognised within the Indian film industry with awards such as the Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for Paigham (1960) and the Filmfare Best Director Award for Aankhen (1969). His filmography as a director and producer includes Zindagi (1964), Arzoo (1965), Aankhen (1968), Charas (1976), Bhagawat (1980) and Salma (1985).

Sagar was especially prominent in television from the mid-1980s onward. He produced and directed the mythological series Vikram Aur Betaal in 1986 and reached a vast audience with Ramayan, which premiered in 1987 and became one of the longest-running and most-watched mythological TV serials in India. He followed Ramayan with related and other devotional series, including Luv Kush (1988), Krishna (1992) and Sai Baba (2005).

Honours and later recognition

Across his life Sagar received several honours for his contributions to arts and literature. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000. Academic recognitions came later in his career as well, including a Doctor of Literature (Sahitya Vachaspati) by the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan in 1996 and an honorary D.Litt. from Jammu University in 1997.
