Ramchandra Siras Biography
Ramchandra Siras was an Indian academic, linguist and author best known as the subject of the film Aligarh (2015). A longtime professor at Aligarh Muslim U
Early life and backgroundRamchandra Siras was born in 1948 and raised in a Marathi-speaking family in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He completed his early schooling in Nagpur and went on to study linguistics and psychology at Nagpur University. He also pursued postgraduate studies in psychology at Hislop College in Nagpur and later undertook clinical psychology training at the Central Institute of Psychiatry in Ranchi.
Siras earned a PhD from Nagpur University in 1985. His doctoral research took place over several years and focused on a specialised topic in Indian literature.
Career
Siras worked in academia for most of his professional life. Early in his career he served as a research assistant in the Department of Linguistics at Ranchi University. He joined Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1988 and was appointed reader in Modern Indian Languages in 1998. He later became chair of AMU’s Department of Modern Indian Languages.
At AMU he taught and supervised students, developing interest among many in the study of Marathi despite the university’s predominantly Urdu- and Hindi-speaking student body. He also mentored research students in Nagpur and conducted research and public programmes on Marathi literature, including work on the poems of B.C. Mardekar and coordination of symposia in Nagpur.
Outside the classroom, Siras wrote and published poetry. His collection Paya Khalchi Hirawal (Grass under my feet) was recognised with an award from the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad in 2002.
Personal life
Siras was married later in life and his marriage ultimately ended in divorce. He had no children and is recorded as having one sister. Since his teenage years he experienced epileptic seizures; medical advice delayed his marriage until his condition improved. He was known for simple personal habits and plain dressing, and he enjoyed old Hindi films and music. He kept to a vegetarian diet and in quieter moments knitted and cooked for himself.
Public profile
In early February 2010 Siras became the centre of a controversy at Aligarh Muslim University. On 8 February 2010, two local television journalists recorded him in a private encounter at his university apartment. The following day AMU suspended him from his post for alleged gross misconduct; an order that was later overturned by the courts, which restored his position.
Death
On 7 April 2010 Ramchandra Siras was found dead in his Aligarh apartment at the age of 62. Initial reports described the death as a suicide, but an autopsy reportedly detected traces of poison and an investigation followed. At one point six people were arrested; later authorities closed the case citing insufficient evidence.
Legacy and representation
Siras’s life and the events at AMU entered wider public awareness through the 2015 film Aligarh, directed by Hansal Mehta, in which actor Manoj Bajpayee portrayed him. The film received critical attention and brought renewed focus to Siras’s career, the legal matter at the university, and questions of privacy and academic freedom.
Latest updates
There are no newer developments in Siras’s biography beyond the legal and investigative outcomes reported after his death and the release of the film based on his life.
