Early life and background

Ghattamaneni Ramesh Babu was born on 13 October 1965 in Madras (present-day Chennai), Tamil Nadu. He belonged to the Ghattamaneni family of Andhra Pradesh and counted Burripalem, Guntur as his hometown. His father was film-maker Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna and his mother was Indira Devi; he was also part of a large blended family that included step-mother Vijaya Nirmala and several siblings, among them brothers Mahesh Babu and Naresh Babu and sisters Manjula, Padmavathi and Priyadarshini. Ramesh Babu married Mrudula and was a father to two children: a son, Jaya Krishna Ghattamaneni, and a daughter, Bharathi Ghattamaneni.

Career

Ramesh Babu entered films as a child actor and appeared in several Telugu productions during the 1970s. Early credits include roles in Dongalaku Donga, Manushulu Chesina Dongalu and Annadammula Saval, and at age 14 he and his younger brother appeared in the Telugu film Needa. After a period away from acting, he returned to play lead roles beginning with the 1987 Telugu film Samraat, in which he played the title character.

Through the late 1980s and into the early 1990s he acted in a string of Telugu features, including Bazaar Rowdy, Mugguru Kodukulu, Krishna Gaari Abbayi and Kaliyuga Abhimanyudu. He also worked in Tamil cinema, with a noted lead appearance in Shanti Enathu Shanti. His last on-screen acting credit listed was the 1997 Telugu film Encounter, where he portrayed the character Suryam.

Alongside his acting, Ramesh Babu moved into film production. He established Krishna Productions Private Limited in Hyderabad, a banner named in honour of his father. Films released under that company included Arjun (2004), Athidhi (2007), Dookudu (2011) and Aagadu (2014). He also served in an executive producing capacity on the Hindi film Sooryavansham (1999).
