Early life and background

Ramesh Sippy was born on 23 January 1947 in Karachi, then part of British India. The son of film-maker G. P. Sippy and Mohini Sippy, he visited film sets as a young child and made his first on-screen appearance at age nine. He briefly attended the London School of Economics to study business but returned to India within months and joined his family's work in films.

Career

Sippy entered the industry as a child artist, appearing in the 1953 film Shahenshah and later acting in films such as Bewaqoof (1960) and Bhai Behan (1969). He spent the 1960s learning the craft behind the camera, working in direction and production on projects including Johar-Mehmood in Goa (1965) and Mere Sanam (1965), and serving as an assistant director for several years.

He made his directorial debut with Andaz in 1971. Two years later he directed Seeta Aur Geeta, a film that earned the lead actress a Filmfare Best Actress award. Sippy reached the height of his reputation with the 1975 release of Sholay, which went on to become an iconic and enduring film in Hindi cinema.

Following Sholay, Sippy continued directing high-profile projects. He made the action-tinged Shaan in 1980 and brought together Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar for Shakti (1982). In 1985 he directed Saagar, a film regarded as a comeback for its lead actress. He also worked in television, directing the Doordarshan serial Buniyaad in 1986–1987, a series rooted in the history of India's Partition.

Later work and hiatus

After a run of commercially unsuccessful films—Bhrashtachar (1989), Akayla (1991), and Zamaana Deewana (1995)—Sippy stopped directing for an extended period. He remained involved in the industry and in 2003 returned as a producer with Kuch Naa Kaho, a film directed by his son Rohan Sippy. In September 2014 he announced a return to direction with Shimla Mirchi, a film that featured Hema Malini, Rajkummar Rao, Rakul Preet Singh, and Shakti Kapoor.

Public profile

Across his career Sippy has been recognized with several honors. Sholay was later named Filmfare Best Film of 50 Years in 2005. He received the IIFA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema (Male) in 2012 and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013. He is known to enjoy reading, writing, and travelling.

Sippy's family is prominent in Indian cinema. His father, G. P. Sippy, was a producer and director. Ramesh Sippy's elder brother and other family members have also been involved in film production. He has been married more than once; his first wife was Geeta Sippy, with whom he had a son, director Rohan Sippy. He later married actress Kiran Juneja in 1991. His daughters include Sheena Sippy and Sonya Sippy Sondhi.

Notable public actions

When a 3D version of Sholay was prepared for release, Sippy took legal steps to seek a stay on that version's release, explaining that he had not been consulted before the film was converted to the new format.

Latest updates

After several years away from directing, Sippy announced Shimla Mirchi in 2014. Prior to that, he returned to production in 2003 with a film directed by his son. His career spans acting, direction, production, and television work, and he remains identified with Sholay as his most famous achievement.
