Early life and background

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa was born on 10 August 2005 in Padi, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a chess-playing family: his father, Rameshbabu, worked in a bank and his mother, Nagalakshmi, has been closely involved in supporting the children’s chess careers. Praggnanandhaa’s elder sister, Vaishali Rameshbabu, is also a titled player who went on to earn Woman Grandmaster and International Master norms. The family has managed travel and tournament obligations largely through the mother’s support.

Praggnanandhaa showed an early aptitude for the game. He began learning chess around the age of three and a half, and he trained regularly with coach RB Ramesh. Alongside chess, he has attended camps and watched games by top players to improve his skills; his family has said academics remain secondary to his chess development though he does well at school.

Career

Praggnanandhaa’s rise through youth chess was rapid. He won the World Youth Chess Championship in the Under-8 section in 2013 and followed that with the Under-10 title in 2015. By age seven he had already earned the FIDE Master title. At 10 years, 10 months and 19 days he became the youngest international master at the time.

He reached grandmaster status in multiple steps during 2017–2018. He secured a first grandmaster achievement at the World Junior Chess Championship in 2017 and added further GM norms in 2018 at the Heraklion Fischer Memorial and the Gredine Open in Urtijëi, Italy, becoming one of the youngest grandmasters in history.

Praggnanandhaa continued to collect strong results as he matured. He won the World Youth Championships Under-18 section in October 2019 and crossed the 2600 rating mark in December 2019, becoming one of the youngest players to do so. In April 2021 he won the Polgar Challenge, a young talents event organized by Julius Baer and Chess24, and he was the winner of the Tata Steel Masters championship in 2022.

A defining moment for Praggnanandhaa came in 2022 when he defeated reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen in the eighth round of the Airthings Masters. That victory attracted widespread attention and public congratulations from prominent figures in India. He followed up with further high-profile wins over Carlsen later in 2022, including the Chessable Masters and in the FTX Crypto Cup final match-up.

In the following years he continued to build his résumé. On 29 May 2024 he beat Magnus Carlsen in a classical game at the Norway Chess tournament, marking his first classical victory over the world number one. At the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest he was part of the Indian contingent that won the Gaprindashvili Trophy on 22 September 2024. In June 2025, after winning the UzChess Cup by defeating Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Praggnanandhaa became India’s number one ranked player.

Praggnanandhaa is active on social media and has attracted media coverage in India and abroad. He has been praised by leading figures in chess — including Viswanathan Anand, who described him as a complete package — and has received recognition beyond the chess world. In October 2023 the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, S. Somanath, visited him and announced a collaboration to encourage young people toward careers in science and engineering.
